Three members of Sen. George Allen's college football team remember a man with racist attitudes at ease using racial slurs.

Higginbotham's words on Thomas nomination

No longer could a United States Senator say what Senator Benjamin Tillman of South Carolina said in anger when President Theodore Roosevelt invited a moderate Negro, Booker T. Washington, to lunch at the White House: "'Now that Roosevelt has eaten with that nigger Washington, we shall have to kill a thousand niggers to get them back to their place.'" 57

Senator Bird

I wonder if Senator Bird ( aka the Grand Kliegal(sic) - or whatever) used the word "Nigger" before. If he did don't you think he should resign from the Senate?

Why George and Anne divorced.

A reader asked why George Allen and Anne Rubels divorced, making it sound like George dumped Anne. Note the time line below:

1977 » Graduates from University of Virginia Law School

1979 » Marries Anne Patrice Rubel

1979 » Loses first campaign for Virginia House of Delegates

1981 » Elected to Virginia House of Delegates

1983 » Divorced

I worked at Ch. 29, in Charlottesville, when Anne was the spokesmodel for Brown Automotive ads, which were produced at and ran on Ch. 29, during the time she married George. I also was involved in the first live remote broadcast Ch. 29 ever did; the location was the restarting of the Albemarle County fair in 1979; the interviewer was Rex Hodge, now at WVPT in Harrisonburg, and one of the the interviewees was George, in his first, unsuccessful campaign. I spoke to Anne then, and she was not happy at that time about his political ambitions; I suspect she was relieved that he lost. Then he ran again, and won.

Anne, a model-beautiful tall thin blond, married George when he was a young lawyer with a struggling new practice. She knew she did not have all of what it took to be an ambitious politicians wife; so the marriage went downhill as George's political fortunes rose.

Ever heard the old cliche "once burned, twice shy?". Google around for a full profile of George, and check out the story about how George "tested" Susan, his second wife, to see if she was ready to be a "politicians wife" before he proposed.
