Re: wtf?
You are right about the length and in some ways the form of my post. I suppose you can tell that I consider the rhetorical dearth at this time to be quite precarious - even perilous - for the land of my children's futures. I apologize.

Double standard argument not a defense anymore
There's an argument that says, How much is too much? Too much is what you wouldn't want done to a U.S. citizen.
But this government is not known for protecting its citizens beyond what's necessary to keep us consuming and running the economy. For example, we know from countless studies before and after its approval that aspartame is unsafe, yet Rumsfeld got it approved.
Now the Air Force is suggesting testing non-lethal, "beamed" microwave and similar weapons on U.S. citizens for crowd control because - get this - it would be easier to deal with complaints about possible health problems here than overseas.
The face of Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne's argument is good (and should apply to torture as well), that "If we're not willing to use it here against our fellow citizens, then we should not be willing to use it in a wartime situation."
The problem is that Wynne thinks we should use these weapons here.

It's pretty simple...
IF you read between the lines, this is all about members of the executive branch covering their ass and making sure no one will be charged with war crimes. This is about protecting peoples jobs and pensions--follow the money.
This goes all the way back to Abu ghraib. It's ok if some low-level people take the fall for crimes, but the people that create the policy and enforce execution of the policy will not be held to account. Why do you think this Administration pulled us out of the International Criminal Court in 2002? Not because they didn't want to participate, but to protect its own.
The president must really be making some threatening overtures to memeber of Congress (of they just don't want to see anybody go to jail--that's a Republican). We are no longer a nation of laws...we are a national of people who are in control and want all of the money and power to themselves to tell us what's right....

Quid pro quo
Duncan Hunter, House Armed Services Committee chairman, did pass Bush’s plan through his committee. However, this was a preordained event.
Recent activity by Mr. Hunter includes the swift-boating of Representative Murtha, his close association with former Representative and current convict Randy “Duke” Cunningham’s crimes, and a long history of questionable movement of federal funds.
Mr. Hunter has signaled that he is willing to help Mr. Bush and Company find a way out of the prosecutor’s office. Mr. Hunter is hoping he will be paid in kind when current investigations put him in harm’s way after the fall elections.

news vs opinion
While I found this article interesting and informative overall, I found one thing a bit puzzling:
"John Kerry was branded a flip-flopper for far less."
That is clearly an opinion. It's an opinion with which I happen to agree, but it is an opinion. Please be careful to put articles which express opinions in the opinion section rather than the news section.
Thanks,
TG

Dunkin' Moslems Instead of Donuts
Yep, those confessions by the heathens on the verge of drowning are sure 'nuff credible. Water board'n, just like surfin', only with less reverb. This country has fallen so far so fast it's hard to keep up. Let's see: coup? Check. Invsasion of another country without provocation (except that which we fabricated)? Check. Fascist-style co-mingling of big business, military, and rampant unquestioning patriotism? Check. Germany 1939? Nope. USA, 2003 and counting. Count me out. Vote Democatic in November for every single office at the state level and above. No exceptions. These fascists must be turned back. Now would be good.

nagging worry
OK, we see that between the demands to be allowed to torture, to spy on people at will, to eliminate all checks and balances, etc. the general plan is to increase the authority of the Presidency to absolutist levels, beyond any limitations. But they can't all be stupid enough to see that there's a good chance that someday there will be a Democrat president again; maybe even in a couple of years, to whom they will be handing over this apparatus.
Why aren't the boosters of the Imperial Presidency more worried about their legacy? They're not all so completely stupid that they can't see that their turn will end someday, are they? Is there any reason why they're not worried that the next president will be free to bug their phone lines on the grounds that he suspects them of treason? Do they know of any reason why our expectations that there might someday be a Democrat elected President are wrong?

Let's see...
How about whenever one of these upstanding, moral,God fearing patriots that occupy the legislative branch says that, "outrages against human dignity", is too vague, someone walks up and slaps the living shit out of them, then asks the slapee, "Is that an outrage on your dignity?".
Question answered. Vague my ass.

gop's tortured logic
they call tony blair bush's poodle, but duncan hunter is really his lapdog. as a republican before the party was southernized, it's a real disgrace to see this congressman buy any and everything bush sells. maybe he just wants to get invited to the ranch to play cowboys and muslims

SEND George's "REPUBLICAN GUARD" to any undisclosed GULAG which they have CONDONED! SET AMERICA FREE from these "WAR CRIMINALS"!
ENOUGH DONE against "WE THE PEOPLE"!
Enough Done in "LIBERATION for FREEDOM", by the DEATH of the "LIBERATED".
And the SUICIDE of those "STOP-LOSSED" to liberate them.
Those who have chosen to leave THEIR LAND just as those Buddhist Monks did
