Bush ran as a moderate, tacked right and governed ineffectually -- before 9/11. Since then he's become the most radical American president in history -- and arguably the worst.

  • A man obsessed

Blumenthal's fixation on Bush has really become incredibly boring. Obviously he is the worst President ever. But it's childish to pretend that the U.S. was paradise on earth under Clinton and that Bush singlehandedly ruined our great nation. Bush's (or rather, Cheney's) policies are desperate attempts to assert the planetary domination the U.S. has always hungered for, at a time when historical forces are disintegrating U.S. society from within and without.

Anyway, it's patently ridiculous to discuss Bush's crimes and stupidities, as Blumenthal does here, without even mentioning the Democrats. Bush's most shocking and unforgivable attacks on the Constitution and international law - the Patriot Act and the wars in the Middle East - were of course supported by the Democrats, who tripped over themselves to prove their jingoistic and anti-civil rights credentials. Bush and Co. may be madmen, but I can respect them more as honest enemies than I can a stalking-horse weasel like Kerry.

An example of Democratic dishonest complicity which Blumenthal fudges: Jeffords obviously gave the Senate majority to the Democrats as part of a behind-the-scenes deal in which Democrats agreed to allow the Supreme Court to cancel the 2000 election.

  • middle america

"As democracy is perfected, the office of the president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." (H.L. Mencken 1880 - 1956)

I have a bunch of in laws that are wonderfully kind and caring human beings, most of whom, voted for G.W.B., twice. I love them and their kids are great. However, it is my opinion, that if you as a consenting adult, voted for George W. Bush in two seperate presidential elections, you and your children should have to shoulder your burden, and go to Iraq to pay for what you have done. Sure, the democrats are a spineless joke, but do you really think we would be in the middle of some crazy world war if Al Gore was elected?

  • Wow.

This article so comprehensively addresses the multi-faceted attack on the America we all grew up in that I can only say "Wow." I have railed against the attack on the Middle Class and the contempt for Checks and Balances, but Sidney Blumenthal shows how much deeper and broader the attack on America is. I am very impressed with this article.

I have been asking myself lately, "What if Bush and Co. are NOT incompetent but instead are as competent as you would expect of people occupying such positions? That would mean the status of today was planned for. Why would they want today's situation to exist?" I believe that is the critical question of today.

  • Things to remember

"Sure, the democrats are a spineless joke, but do you really think we would be in the middle of some crazy world war if Al Gore was elected?"

Actually, Al Gore WAS elected. And if he'd taken office, we might never have had a 9/11. (Ask anyone who worked on terrorism in the Clinton White House, as I have. They can't come out and say it publicly, however, as they know how they'd be savaged.)

  • Still Not Getting It. You're Saying a Goat . . . is Your Pet?

With respect to Mr. Blumenthal, whose writing I admire and enjoy, I didn't make it past his first sentence before I had to respond that David Letterman was among the very first to notice, prior to the 2000 "election", that Junior is not just stupid but actually dangerous. Dangerous because he's weak, and therefore susceptible to being dominated by such macho posuers as Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, et al. No fighting in the war room!

  • Al Gore in 2000 instead of Bush - yes please!!

John makes an excellent point about what things might be like had Gore been elected in 2000. Even if 9/11 had happened on his watch he would more than likely have acted in a much more sober and intelligent way than George Junior. The only problem for Gore would have been the republican dominated congress who, along with GW, would have been sniping at his heels and maybe GW would then have made it in 2004. Would they not have fabricated about Iraq out of power just as they did in power? If we had not suffered Bush in 2000 we would probably have wound up with him in 2004 and then what? Would we start the cycle then instead of Gore's reign? The greatest mistake the voters made was in 2004 when they re-elected a man with obvious learning difficulties, a history of drunkeness and a lazy disposition. In other words, a waster!

  • why?

Mr. Blumenthal - You have told us what, but not why. I can't fully understand the actions without understanding the motivations. Is it wealth? Surely they have access to plenty. Is it power? The power granted to them is not sufficient already? Have they no concept of the swinging pendulum of American politics? The powers that vest in today's Republican president will be wielded by a Democrat soon enough. Is it my worst fear, that these men and women are actually psycologically deranged and our country is controlled by maniacal despots with grandiose ideas of their place in the history of the world?

  • correction

end of paragraph 6-should read vote-counters not vote-voters

  • always knew

Bush never fooled me. I never thought the Florida vote counting fiasco was a one-off and I knew they were cheating, and intent upon cheating, from the start. Scalia and Thomas should be disbarred for the conflicts of interest they maintained throughout the Supreme Court case. These people live like cheaters and always have, which is why they do not know how the world works, and the policies they come up with have no relationship to reality, and are failures. Does no one remember the events of Feb 2001, when they began to send planes into Iraq to provoke Saddam into retaliating? They are and always were despicable. Are they incompetent? Are they immoral? Are they cheaters and liars? Yes, all of the above. They are incompetent BECAUSE they are cheaters and liars and always have been. Bush and Cheney have NO virtues at all of any kind. And Scalia is worse.
