Real threat or fake terror?

Even the FBI says there's no evidence of a bomb plot, but prosecutors in Michigan refuse to set three Arab-Americans free.

The letters thread is now closed.

As if Palestinians don't get harassed enough in Palestine

Good to know that our government is really on top of things here. Arresting cell phone traffickers makes me feel safer from the international anti-American climate, for sure.

How many cell phones does it take to blow up the Mackinac bridge?

Why is buying cell phones in bulk so likely to raise suspicion when it only takes one cell phone, not hundreds, to detonate an explosive device? Maybe we shouldn't let Arabs buy any cell phones at all, or cameras for that matter.

Ahhhh!!! Cell phones bought by Muslims!!!

For the love of GOD! Stop the islamofascists from buying any more cell phones!! Next thing, they'll be buying...MP3 players to upload messages from Usama bin Hiden? STOP THE TERROR; KILL THEM NOW!!! And kill any LIBERAL pig dog who disagrees with me; how else can we save democracy?

We are Only an Ownership Society Not a Sellership Society

This story brings about a number of issues I learned this past week.

The obvious- the heightened xenophobic tendencies of red blooded American Wal-Mart employees just doin' their job for God, Mom, and non-union wages. Bush should award this Wal-Mart Greeter with the Congressional Medal of Honor. I smell a photo-op.

The lesson- we learn that terrorists can blow-up a plane with a Dr. Scholl's gel insert, plastic container of Dasanai Water, and a Tom Clancy novel. But here's the clencher, these Texas Jihadists can cook meth with 600 prepaid cell phones. Imagine how much chrystal they could have gotten with that many Dell laptop batteries.

The conclusion- if these individuals are being held and possibly prosecuted for purchasing numerous amounts cell phones and modifying them so that they can have new plans to resell in flea markets, then I advise you not to do the following: Do not buy a PC open it up and upgrade it with more ram, memory or better graphics card and resell it. Do not add rims, spoiler, headers, or any thing else to your purchased vehicle and try to sell it on e-bay. Do not paint the numbers in the paint by numbers set you bought at the hobby store and resell it at a yard sell. Don't sell anything you owned, because it means you probably bought it from a store. That's tampering with merchandise you purchased- that means you're a terrorist and you're going to federal prison.

The advantage of bad people not caring about you

I'm not saying this to be mean or elitist, but nobody outside of the Midwest who isn't an ex-pat or related to somebody there gives a flying f#@k about the Midwest. This is a good thing for those living there. You really aren't a terrorist target because the terrorists both know nothing about you and care nothing about you. When those outside of the US think about the US, they think about New York City, DC, or Los Angeles. They don't care about Michigan or Nebraska; it means nothing to them. Deep-dish, Chicago-style pizza is usually referred to as "New York style" outside of the US, in my, admittedly, limited experience, because Chicago doesn't even mean much to people outside of the country. It's not impossible that non-US terrorists would target the middle of the country, to be sure, but it is genuinely unlikely. They don't care! You're like Canada or Sweden (though, arguably, more culpable); revel in it.

Ok, if anybody responds to this, it will probably be people pointing out cases where deep-dish pizza is referred to as Chicago-style outside of the US.

Do's and Don'ts of the Republic

As an African-American-identified male who is six foot one and weighs one hundred and eighty pounds, I know better than to A) go jogging in a predominately white residential area at the crack of dawn, B) walk into a shop in an upscale mall wearing a backpack or too many layers of clothing, C) approach an unknown white woman for any reason at any hour of the day or night in any American city other than Manhattan (and even there, I'd better be wearing a business suit and fairly expensive shoes at the time). WTF were these young men of Palestinian descent thinking? Do they think they're white?

"I'm not saying this to be mean or elitist..."

Obviously, you were saying it in order to sound dumb.

The Real Threat is the Fake Terror Fearmongering and Political Gaming...

Real threats of fake terror? The tone that both the Ashcroft and now also Gonzales

JDs have set is overt politicalization of "terror threats" to pump up the jam on

"we are fighting terror-we take terror seriously and have protected you again-we are

your firstline of defense against terror-fear/terror/feel threatened/dangerous world/

beware of those different than you/fear/terror/danger. As with last weeks "liquid terror

attack" the specifics of the more balanced and portioned "followup story" reveal

the "attackers" were not in the system with passports, tickets and requisite materials

packaged, set and ready to go. As with that bunch of "terrorists" in Florida...as with

the New York "flood unleashing terrorists"...again no followup hard evidence. At some

point perhaps someone who is not spine-challenged will blow the whistle and call the

foul on the current fearmongering bunch in Washington DC. Until then we should all

just calm down and not listen to the "Floyds and Goobers" too seriously. Keeping

things in perspective is important as is keeping your common sense near and ready for

application. The Bush bunch is getting lots of play on this "fear and terror" riff.

FDR said the only we need fear is fear itself. Too bad the Bush gang goes for the

cheap shots and easy points. If there was a "war" declared on crappy leadership this

bunch would be in serious trouble. Trying to get "bounce" out of needlessly scaring

and inducing people to hold irrational, unfounded racist based fear is deplorable

conduct and the current WH surely ought to be held accountable for its trying to

tie law enforcement and public safety issues to its political posturing and posing.

John S

Hilarious post!:) I'm from Michigan and I can attest to the ignorance rampant in the small towns outside of Detroit. Those boys are going to have some tough times ahead, I hope their lawyer is able to free them. The whole case sounds thoroughly ridiculous and fabricated.

Very Difficult to Blow Up

The Mackinac Bridge is constantly being painted, finish at one end and start at the other, day and night. Anyone who has crossed this span would immediately recognize the incredible difficulty involved. Pictures of the bridge are no doubt just that. The incredible ignorance of both state and fed prosecutors is just amazing. I am now going to go burn my pictures of the Bridge...
