What about married women? Is abstinence the answer for them too? How on earth can you be against abortion AND against birth control? Women--of any age--with good access to correct birth control are SO MUCH LESS LIKELY to need an abortion. Stopping unwanted pregnancies--that's the root cause for ending abortion.
I am not medically talented. I barely made it out of high school biology. But reading articles like this almost makes me want to go back to school to be a doctor. What will happen to the women of Mississippi when Dr. Booker retires? What will happen when the few doctors in my neighboring state retire? High malpractice rates plus the threat of crazies aren't making med school students flock to women's health.
Again, I just don't get it.
When you meet someone who says that abortion is not justifiable under any circumstances, just ask them, "Oh, yeah? And how many unwanted children have you adopted?".
The answer is usually silence.
Goddamn hypocrites.
Wasn't the fate of this clinic covered on either public television or 60 Minutes something like 6 months ago? (I recall one of the protesters was filmed right outside the clinic talking to patients in a baby voice, saying, "Mommy! Mommy, don't kill me! Mommy, I want to live!". It was a dead-on impression of a talking fetus, if fetuses could talk and had a habit of sucking helium before, you know, talking.)
I've asked the same question about being against abortion and birth control of born-again Christian friends of mine, and they say it's really about one thing: the patriarchal fundamentalist Christian hierarchy being terrified of female sexual power and sexuality in general. So they try to control conception, childbirth, sexual preference, etc. They fear sexuality because it is so primal; they want the only primal passions to involve their vengeful Deity. Very 1984 (the book, not the year).
What I don't get is, um, what do gays and Muslims have to do with this? If you're against abortion, that's fine. Protest if you have to, it's in the First Amendment. But burning rainbow flags and copies of the Koran? Does being a Christian these days come down to being a hate-spewing ignoramus talking nonsense about the Last Days and teaching your kids that what God really wants us to do is exterminate people who don't believe as we do?
Is that fucking insane, or is it just me?
I agree with the other writers who question how protesting against abortion can have any connection to homophobia and bigotry. These people are subhuman, and hypocrites to boot. Save all unborn babies but kill those Muslims???
I think I'm going to be sick.
"According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, more than half of the state's children under 6 years old live in destitution."
All of those crisis pregnancy centers tell the mother-to-be that they will help, that she isn't alone. Then, after she has the baby, she finds that she really is all alone. Half of their children under 6 living in poverty. What kind of person encourages a woman to have a baby, then let's that baby live in poverty? "Christian" apparently doesn't mean what I always thought it meant.
So, it is ok with you if Mulsim women get abortions? I'm a Christian, and I just want to make sure I have my save/kill marching orders straight.
Actually, the part about me being Christian is true. And Flip dear, you're making me reconsider like no atheist antagonist I've ever debated with has even come close to doing. Nice work, brother. Way to spread the Good News!
Keep the voting process as clean as you can in your districts. Complain, make calls, sign petitions, get good reps in office. Get your friends to be active with Planned Parenthood. Make one call today; write a check today.
Broadsheet should be devoting a lot of space to Abortion Under Seige in America. Yes, 'mommyhood might be boring' but it pales in comparison to this.
Feminists should be making this their number one issue.
Those 3 brave souls in MS--Betty Thompson, Susan Hill and Dr. Booker--should be given around the clock protection, money, help. They should do their procedures in the middle of the night if that's what it's going to take. You have to make the fight that focused; that tiny. It's come down to one clinic and a handful of people. Don't waste your energy on men and children with signs. They are unreachable. Don't be in awe of them; do not wring your hands anymore. Get on the phone and ask Planned Parenthood what you can do to help; how you help those people in MS.
I do disagree with Ms. Thompson when she says women will do whatever it takes to get their abortions. That's just not true. It's impossible for impoverished, misled, and manipulated women to get their abortions. In MS it's a challenge for ALL women to obtain abortions.
I've posted a bazillion times on this.
Get your car tuned up for the underground railroad. Women will need help to get to states where they can obtain safe abortions. It will come to that.
Thanks Salon for making this your main story.
This article is a perfect picture of today's fascist pharisee fanatic republikan party. At least Hitler youth were fit and disciplined. These freaks have no redeeming features. And they aren't Christians.
I covered Operation Save America when they were in Wichita last year.
They were protesting outside North High School, and had set up a stage where they were yelling from bullhorns. They shoved flyers with their fetus pictures at girls, and girls that refused to take the flyers said that they felt threatened.
North High School students staged a counter-protest at the OSA group's church. That's the one I was present at, and I too was amazed at the anti-Islam rhetoric. It's a disturbing sight to see young children, kindergarteners, holding those signs.
Most states have these laws (still). When they outlaw abortion across America, get the word out to these women to drop their babies off at the firehouse or police station. Repeat 10 million times. Stand back and watch the psychochristians heads explode as they have to fork over TAX dollars to support those orphans. I mean sanctity of life is all noble and shit, but we're talkin bout TAX dollars! We'll see abortion laws resurrected in states faster'n you can say 'nealboortzfairtax'.
See sometimes the best way to conquer a control freak is to give them exactly what they want.
