The "hiding among civilians" myth

Israel claims it's justified in bombing civilians because Hezbollah mingles with them. In fact, the militant group doesn't trust its civilians and stays as far away from them as possible.

Herald Sun Photo

Actually that Herald Sun photo claimed to have a broken down truck IN A CHRISTIAN NEIGHBOURHOOD, in the east of Lebanon.

Some genius might like to inform us all why the shi'ite Hezbollah would be in a christian neighbourhood and then pin point any christian neighbourhood that has been bombed to bits.

The Herald Sun is a rag. The article also claims that Katushya rockets had been fired from that christian area - if so were the christians firing them when we know for sure that none have been fired from Beirut at all.

Now the Katushya is a tiny rocket which will cause some damage on a direct hit but the bomb that dropped on the house was a 450 kg US made guided missile.

Get a grip all the muslim haters.

re: Well, I don't think it applies to NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS, which is the group Jeffrey referrenced when his knee jerked thusly:

this is ironic, right? because nobody could be that stupid!

Herald Sun

catnick2,

I thought my points were quite clear:

a) It was claimed that rockets were launched from a suburb in Beirut. Hezbollah has no rockets that can hit Israel from Beirut.

b) There are pictures of a group of men riding on an anti-aircraft gun. There's no indication they are Hezbollah at all, and an anti-aircraft gun is a defensive weapon.

c) There's a picture of an aged man holding a AK47, no indication at all that he's Hezbollah. Plus how many AK47 owners do you think there are in the middle-east?

They avoid Arab civilians

"Hezbollah fighters -- as opposed to the much more numerous Hezbollah political members, and the vastly more numerous Hezbollah sympathizers -- avoid civilians."

Arab civilians, that is. Hezbollah terrorists have no problem moving among Israeli civilians and blowing them to pieces.

This double-standard is sickening. Arabic, UN, and posturing world leaders express outrage about the dead Lebannese children, and generally, maintain silence about innocent Israelis killed by Hezbollah rockets or homicide bombers?

Get real.

Wow Speak Truth to Power

How about you try answering my question, instead of blissfully ignoring it? Does the word Anti-Semitism apply to Jews and Arabs? Or just Jews? Or just Arabs?

Let me explain Jeffrey's point so your shoe-size IQ mind can understand.

America (and Canada, and Mexico) were founded by Europeans who came to a large track of land that was occupied by North American Indians, who were cleared away and dispossessed.

Australia was founded by British convicts. And the Aborigine were cleared away and dispossessed.

Israel was founded by Jewish Zionists. The claim of the anti-Zionists is that the Palestinians were there in large numbers, cleared away and dispossess.

Unlike America and unlike Australia however, Jews have had a historical and religious history and connection to that land centuries before Muhammad or Jesus ever took their first baby steps.

Nor was "Palestine" heavily occupied, if you read Mark Twain or Joan Peters.

Still, even if the anti-Zionists propaganda was true, why is it you want to punish Israel for doing what America and Australia have done?

The difference is that Israel is a Jewish state and America is not.

So we figure it has something to do with Jews.

Got it now?

Good. Now go back to your coloring books.

Make up your mind(s)

Why do the headline and the tagline say Hezbollah doesn't hide its installations among civilians and the first paragraphs clearly state the opposite? It seems your editorial departments wants to condemn Israel at any cost and sticks whatever it feels like over the reporting.

Anyway, see the following item from Australia's Herald Sun that http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,,19955774-5007220,00.html that proves the opposite case.

Rockets on trucks

I believe that Israel is doing itself

much more harm than good by trying to

go after Hezbollah in this manner. The

South- Lebanese cannot or will not evacuate effectively (many are very poorand cannot afford transportation) even

given warnings via phone calls, leaflets

and TV. The Israeli military has actually

released films showing rockets on trucks

next to apartment buildings, which then

retreat between buildings after they fire.

You could claim "fabrication" of this if

you were paranoid, but I don't think this

is the case. I think there are rockets

among civilians, but Israel should not

go after them by air because it will

undoubtably cause civilian deaths which

is immoral and radicalizes the arab street to Israels detriment.

What a sorry position

It's sad and sorry that as anti-Semitic liberals, you people have to be in the position of defending the bloodthirsty TERRORIST savages Hezbollah. What a pathetic state the left is in! Putting quotes around the word terrorist when describing Hezbollah? Do you really dislike Jews SO MUCH that you are willing to defend known, documented terrorists to belittle the Jewish cause in Israel? You disgust me.

Monday, July 31, 2006 12:01 PM

Got it.

Monday, July 31, 2006 12:04 PM

Got it.

Dayenu frothed:

"Got it now?"

Yep. You apparently not only think that North American Indians are Semites, but that all aboriginal people are Semites. Or that being displaced makes you a Semite. Or something.

Maybe an Anth 1000 class would help? There's probably a college or university nearby that is offering something in September.

Don't be embarrassed. You can't learn if you don't reveal your ignorance and ask for help.

Monday, July 31, 2006 12:08 PM

"this is ironic, right? because nobody could be that stupid!"

Yeah, I know. I was a little surprised that anyone was stupid enough to call people anti-semitic for living on North American land, too.

Photos that damn Hezbollah

Chris Link

Herald Sun (Australia)

July 30, 2006 12:00am

THIS is the picture that damns Hezbollah. It is one of several, smuggled from behind Lebanon's battle lines, showing that Hezbollah is waging war amid suburbia.

The images, obtained exclusively by the Sunday Herald Sun, show Hezbollah using high-density residential areas as launch pads for rockets and heavy-calibre weapons.

Dressed in civilian clothing so they can quickly disappear, the militants carrying automatic assault rifles and ride in on trucks mounted with cannon.

The photographs, from the Christian area of Wadi Chahrour in the east of Beirut, were taken by a visiting journalist and smuggled out by a friend.

They emerged as:

US President George Bush called for an international force to be sent to Lebanon.

ISRAEL called up another 30,000 reserve troops.

THE UN's humanitarian chief Jan Egeland called for a three-day truce to evacuate civilians and transport food and water into cut-off areas.

US SECRETARY of State Condoleezza Rice returned to the Middle East to push a UN resolution aimed at ending the 18-day war, and:

A PALESTINIAN militant group said it had kidnapped, killed and burned an Israeli settler in the West Bank.

The images include one of a group of men and youths preparing to fire an anti-aircraft gun metres from an apartment block with sheets hanging out on a balcony to dry.

Others show a militant with AK47 rifle guarding no-go zones after Israeli blitzes.

Another depicts the remnants of a Hezbollah Katyusha rocket in the middle of a residential block blown up in an Israeli air attack.

The Melbourne man who smuggled the shots out of Beirut and did not wish to be named said he was less than 400m from the block when it was obliterated.

"Hezbollah came in to launch their rockets, then within minutes the area was blasted by Israeli jets," he said.

"Until the Hezbollah fighters arrived, it had not been touched by the Israelis. Then it was totally devastated.

"It was carnage. Two innocent people died in that incident, but it was so lucky it was not more."

The release of the images comes as Hezbollah faces criticism for allegedly using innocent civilians as "human shields".

Mr Egeland blasted Hezbollah as "cowards" for operating among civilians.

"When I was in Lebanon, in the Hezbollah heartland, I said Hezbollah must stop this cowardly blending in among women and children," he said.
