Murtha: Marines killed civilians "in cold blood"

Senior House Democrat Jack Murtha warns that the details of a reported massacre in Iraq last year will prove "a very, very bad thing" for the U.S.

The letters thread is now closed.

War? What war?

This, too, shall disappear into the sublime darkness that is the American way of life in the 21st century.

A very, very bad thing

I guess, seeing as this is not very nice, the other news organizations have decided not to report on it for now. I have not found it on the news anywhere else including TV cable news (no surpise there though I do now know all about some guy in Utah with lots of wives and kids and lost kids - thanks for filling me in on that, Andy of the Andy Cooper Hour on CNN). Kudos to Salon for all my real news. As young Colbert might say, the rest of the news folks were probably all home writing the great novel about the intrepid news reporter with balls.

Nuremberg...

I think that word - Nuremberg - needs to be repeated until it's as familiar as, oh, say, "Lewinsky" or "Whitewater." Hey, haven't you heard? It's the new "personal accountability" society. So, are we going to hold someone accountable? (Rummy, I'm lookin' at you.)

Welcome to BushWorld

... where bad news is just not to be discussed.

Ignore it, it will go away.

Besides, there will be entirely different bad news to ignore in another day or two.

The media is so busy doing a p1ss poor job, the just don't have the time or resources to keep track of all the stories they aren't reporting on.

Get it?

Welcome to BushWorld.

Accountability? What accountability?

Lorcan, this was a lead story on NBC earlier

This story isn't yet getting wide play but it does show up on Google news (just search for "Murtha") and it was one of the lead stories on the NBC evening news earlier. You can read the NBC News account here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12838343/

Righties are jumping all over Murtha

The righty blogs are jumping all over Murtha on this, calling him a traitor and demanding his resignation.

I think this will hurt the righties, as I think decent Americans will be appalled by the troops behavior. The righties will be seen for what they are.

All is not lost!

Never fear, at least one media outlet has followed the Salon story. Er, Baku Today, of Azerbijan...

Iraq Endgame? Colin Powell....Come On Down

The parallels with My Lai are too numerous. Do we have to wait another seven years, as in Vietnam, and more untold carnage before the end to George W. Bush's doomed war, or will this massacre of innocent civilians in their roadside dwelling hasten an exit strategy?

This could be Colin Powell's last shot at redemption after his WMD hard sell at the UN as part of the Iraq pre war propaganda. After all, it was then Colonel Colin Powell of the 7th Americal Division stationed in Da Nang who sucessfully kept the lid on the bloodlust slaughter of some 400 Vietnamese civilians at My Lai,including women and children, for almost a year.

If there's anybody around who knows how to "tidy up" this "mess" and get the hell out of Iraq, wholesale and pronto, then it's Colin Powell. Even one of the Vietnam War's chief boosters, former SoS Robert MacNamara, wised up to the horror and folly of it,but it was fourty years too late.

Have we no sense of common decency? Enough is enough. Bring 'em home.

Probably a major break in that case of the missing girl in Aruba.

No wonder they're under so much stress

It blew my mind to recently be reminded by the movie 'Jarhead' that more than 500,000 U.S. forces were sent to achieve the limited objectives of Gulf War I. That fact -- which I do not remember being reported by the worthless corporate media as a basis for comparison in the run-up to the current Iraq War -- puts into perspective the recklessness of the neo-cons, and explains the stress placed on coalition forces. There needs to be accountability not just for the individuals responsible for this one incident, but for those who dreamed up and sold this whole doomed war, which was based on lies and is being fought on the cheap.

Die by the sword

What a waste of perfectly good killing.

Oy Vey

Murtha's gonna get cooked over this. I hope he has an eyewitness who was there who will actually speak about it in public. Because it's really not worth the fight to make these accusations and not back them up with photos or corraborating evidence from an eyewitness.

I'm tired of seeing people who speak out like this go down in flames because they cite "sources" who never materialize. Goddamn it, if this is true, the people who were there who told Murtha and Time Magazine about it better step up to the plate and speak out. It's about time these "sources" acted like men instead of hiding in the shadows, telling people about what they saw and then staying hidden when the rightwing blasts the messengers as treasonous liars.

If Murtha can't fully back this up with solid evidence, then he hasn't learned anything about politics in the past 6 years and he's given the GOP a gift. They love to paint Democrats as America-haters and they'll use Murtha as their poster boy unless he can offer some proof. Don't get me wrong, I PRAY he can offer some proof. Because I am against the war, and have been since September 11, 2002, when George W Bush used the occasion of the first anniversary of the attack on the US as an excuse to make warmongering sounds against Iraq. I remember being in a hotel watching TV and getting a cold rush as he spoke, because I suddenly knew he was going to use the deaths of my fellow citizens as a political excuse to make war on a bunch of people who did nothing to us. But then I thought "Americans won't let this happen. They're not that stupid."
