Identifying a torture icon

The New York Times tried to tell the story of the man behind the infamous Abu Ghraib photo. But the paper may have had the wrong prisoner.

The letters thread is now closed.

what's happening with the NYT?

There is absolutley nothing new in the NY Times story. I don't understand, why they ran the story in the way they did.

The Austrian magazine "Datum" (www.datum.at - see http://www.datum.at/1105/stories/1196541/ for that particular story) as well as the German "Spiegel" (http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/) ran the story about 5,6 months ago.

Do I have to stick to German language media from now on to get the news first?

Using the Geneva Conventions (in the worst sense of the word)

I had to shake my head at this statement in Tuesday's NYT article:

The Times contacted the military, which said the Geneva Conventions prevented it from commenting about the identity of anyone in a photograph.

NOW the military is concerned about the requirements of the Geneva Conventions? How quaint. How convenient.

Trusting the CID for info?

Recall these are the kinds of folks who have lied constantly about everything in Iraq. From Jessica Lynch to Pat Tillman. And who have refused to make any commander take responsability for any actions taken. For all we know there were hundreds if not thousands of men and women put in the very same posture. Please tell us how you CONFIRMED this...

the point is that the figure in the photo represents US torture

and that's what George W. Bush has officially turned this country into: THE WORLD'S LEADER IN TORTURE.

What is wrong with the Times?

Thanks to Salon for the corrective -- glad we can trust someone out there -- but really, I'm beginning to buy into all the right-wing crap that the standards at the New York Times have really fallen. How could they get something like this wrong? Or rather: Why were they so sure of themselves that they spotlighted it as their lead front page story?

Depressing.

Where are the Cartoons?

Hey out there! - This is old news and frankly, trying to make saints out of these guys is like putting lipstick on a pig.

But more to the point - Why this and no Cartoons? Or is that a bridge of reporting too far to cross? They are still rioting in Pakistan over them - when they can spare the time from killing each other with kites. (It's death kite time over there too)

Alas, not breaking

I hate to break it to you, but this is old news. He was covered in NOW with Bill Moyers a year ago, and the same questions were raised.
