In trying to understand how US citizens can participate in such disgusting behavior against their fellow humans, one only need observe daily life in America. Our government and corporate offices are full of arrogant criminals whose lives are spent filling their own pockets, while ignoring the welfare of the working class and society. This leadership has given Americans the most expensive, but worst quality healthcare of most modern countries, while denying millions any healthcare insurance at all. This leadership has given Americans a second rate education system. It's given us a system that ignores the needs of retired, elderly, and disabled citizens. It ignores single mothers desperate for support.
While millions of elderly Americans struggle to comprehend Bush's idiotic drug plan, which was designed to benefit dozens of drug companies rather than elderly citizens, while millions of Americans are homeless and going hungry, while dozens of government officials and corporate leaders and their friends are being investigated and indicted for corruption and fraud, while thousands die in an illegal war that costs taxpayers billions of dollars a week, while many US workers struggle to survive on a minimum wage so low they can't afford basics of life...the US Vice President, Dick Cheney, one of the greatest crooks in world, flies his staff and medical team to south Texas where he can go qail hunting on the ranch of a wealthy lobbyist. This, right after all the scandals about Tom DeLay, who prefers stealing from Americans and illegal world golfing vacations to working as a leader in the US Congress, and Abramoff who'd steel his grandmother's false teeth if he thought he could make a buck, and all the government officials who accepted his bribes.
Sorry fact is that we can only blame the American people for the current crisis, for after all, they are the ones who elected the incompetent and corrupt leaders of their country. That's the way it is in a democracy. The people must accept the responsibility.
Why should anyone be surprised at the US murder rate, police abuse, spousal abuse, child abuse, prisoner abuse... Laws do not control or protect people when they are not followed. And it's obvious that in America our corporate and political leaders live lives where their actions are above the law.
Sigmund Freud said that American Democracy and Capitalism was a great experiment, but was afraid it would never work. He understood human nature more than any other human being. The American system is in decline due to arrogance, greed, and corruption.
