Rebels with a cause

GOP libertarians like New Hampshire Sen. John Sununu are fighting Bush -- and their party -- over the Patriot Act.

The letters thread is now closed.

A nearly content free article

I can't really tease out much of anything in this article. Do we find out anything about Mr. Sununu's stance? No not really. Probably because his stance is largely rhetorical and lacks much of any substance. In end, Libertarians are conservatives who smoke weed and are afraid the gubmint will find out. So maybe there's not any wider issue at all, for them.

Ah, OK, so ....

If Sununu et al are so hot on personal liberty, why are they voting for Alito?

You missed the point

The point wasn't to give you any "black hat/white hat" information on Senator Sununu. The point was to move you into doing a little research on your own and coming to your own conclusions based on what you found.

Forcing Libertarians into any one stereotype (like calling them government fearing pot-smokers) doesn't help anyone, least of all yourself. The same can be said of any group.

One would hope that in an age where independent thought is at a premium, more people come to this conclusion outright.

They are well defined

The local (I say the local because he is so far above his competition) talk radio personality in our area put it succinctly. He said "OK, for those of you who are still living in fantasy land, change the station you are listening to right.... Now. (slight pause) The truth of the matter is that [all] politicians are just whores in a whore house". He was dead serious. I was surprised first of all that he would say that on the radio, i.e. publicly (he has many local and national politicians on his show). Secondly I was glad to hear someone of some stature (if only locally - although we are a major, conservative market) put it so succinctly and accurately.

Please, it's time we stopped treating one group of politicians as though they are any different or better than another. We need a political revolution in this country, but that won't happen if so many of us remain fooled that there are actually "good guys" vs. "bads guys" in power. They are all on the same team, playing the game for our amusement and their political longevity.

Cheers,

Poco

P.S. I am not a republican. I am not a democrat. I am a conservative. Not a lying, cheating, thieving conservative, a real conservative.

Bi-Partisan Protest

It's high time that our congressional leaders stand up for what's right, regardless of party, and stand firm against overzealous Patriot Act provisions. This comes down to our willingness to sacrifice some safety in order to protect the Constitutional freedoms we have held dear for over 200 years.

Believe me, our Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves at the thought of our trivializing the dangers they faced in putting their own necks on the line for freedom and democracy. Freedom comes with certain risks, and we must be willing to accept those risks to ensure that our freedom continues. That doesn't mean that we put our basic rights and freedoms at risk. Nothing - not even our lives - is worth risking those cherished and absolute hallmarks of our way of life.

From Alaska

On this issue, Lisa Murkowski is representing her constituents well. The Patriot Act is very unpopular in Alaska. A couple of years ago, the Republican-controlled legislature voted almost unanimously (there was just one dissenter) for a resolution in opposition to it. The resolution also urged Alaska agencies to not comply. One of the sponsors of the resolution was State House Majority Leader John Coghill, a very true-blue, authentic conservative. He's also a guy who speaks his mind and is not afraid to buck Lisa's father, our governor, on many of his stupid decisions.

to origins

No I'm afraid you're wrong on that point. Self professed "Libertarians" vote with the rightest right wing of the right wing most of the time. It matters little what reason they pull out of their ass to explain it to you. It's just politicking so that can sell 'independent thinking' to the folks at home. Because for all the folks who pretend to be shocked at the spying provisions of the PATRIOT act, they're cheering on an administration that doesn't even pretend to follow the spying laws they themselves implemented. So in a very cynical way - why bother supporting a law (PATRIOT) no one has any illusions even this gang would bother to follow in the first place. No, it's simple electoral hackery. If New Hampshire is anything like the most Libertarian regions of North Carolina (where I live), suspicion of PATRIOT is in direct proportion to the lack of Federal tax filings the fine upstanding citizens rank, year after year. I wonder if that's what really at the core of this.

There, I did me sum resarch. yuh happy?

Libertarian? Or War Monger?

If John Sununu supports the Iraq war, he is not a libertarian.
