...where it's not just Democratic legistlators carve out pork empires. Up until the Republican Revolution, The Right decried pork barrell spending as unique to Democratic hegemony. It's pretty clear that any party that has a solid majority behaves this way. As much as the Cato Institute would like to beleive otherwise, pork is how legislators shore up their political position, no matter which side of the aisle they're on.
Is Ted Stevens the biggest crybaby on Capitol Hill? The race is tough, but Ted is probably the winner. Whether it's trying to keep his oil executive masters from lying or trying to control Ted's pork-fest giveaways, everyone is out to get poor little Teddie. But Teddie will fix them. He'll hold his breath until he turns blue, and then they'll be sorry.
I'm from Alaska and I can tell you that most people don't give one hoot about these bridges. The politicians are simply trying to line the pockets of their friends who do the engineering, construction and other areas of development that have the most to gain from the shameless grab at federal revenue. This money should be put to better use.
