Brilliant raw resource

For grown-ups only. It is difficult-to-stomach-at-times truth. It is honest.

Saddam?

These are all video and pictures of torture Saddam ordered, right?

Right?

I mean, we're the good guys!

Right?

Only evil dictators order such things, allow such thngs, ignore such things or try real hard to cover up such things.

You are what you do when no one is looking.

The low level soliders who did it when no one was looking.

The officers and generals who ordered it when no one was looking.

The generals and politicans who tried to hide it when no one yet knew what they did.

The elected officals who said it was all okay because brown Iraqi's aren't "human" like white Americans are.

now now, children -- it's time to grow up

SURPRISE!!!! -- "Civilized" Americans are just as capable of evil as any other country's citizens.

I mean, we DID invade their country. I don't see how bombs and guns are any more inhumane than what went on at Abu Ghraib. Frankly, I find Salon's recent re-capitalization on the Abu Ghraib horrors to be as outrageous as the outrages they claim to be portraying.

I sure hope Hilary C. wins the nomination -- then we're definitely in for (at least) an additional 8 years of this sort of horrorshow.

Chapter 10

- - - - - - and we watch like it's a reality TV show - - - - - a rivited audience who feign indignation but do nothing to stop the stop this endless cycle of abuse - or using our best to redress violations of rights being committed elsewhere like Sudan, Chad, northern Uganda etc....

United Sheep of America - that's what we've become and it's a disgrace.

US prisons worse!

This is what all the fuss is about? You’ve got to be kidding. It’s clear that those making a fuss about these pictures have never been inside a federal penitentiary in the United States. Far worse goes on every day yet the press turns a blind eye on it. I dare you to go under cover inside a federal pen and write a comparative analyses but of course you won’t do that. I also would like to congratulate the guards who were seen punishing the three men who had raped a teen inmate. If the guards in the US did that (rather then doing absolutely nothing) then perhaps so many young lives would not be ruined and the prison system may even rehabilitate some. Now their choices are either to fight and die, submit and be subject to a life of sexual slavery or join a gang for protection and become society’s worst nightmare. If you goal is to change society for the better I suggest you start here in the US before you start fighting for the rights of our enemies.

Outraged!

As a former Viet-Nam era Marine and a professional journalist, I'm outraged at these photos. Not that you have posted them, but (offensive as they are) they aren't more widely circulated. Yes, I know, it's a matter of good taste not to print or publish them. On the other hand, anyone who supports the current US administration who is guilty of setting processes in motion that resulted in this disgusting, reprehensible behavior, should be forced to watch the vial fruits of the immoral, illegal, un-American policies the Bushies put in place. Anyone who is naive enough to believe US Miliary Commanders and Pentagon officials were unaware of this behavior either doesn't know how the military operates or is in denial! Where is the outrage? Why do we let these dummies stay in office? This is way beyond sex in the oval office!!

Unprofessional Behavior

Yes these are disgusting photos. They are of and taken by untrained personnel that got out of hand. The behavior is reprehensible and should not be tolerated. However, the football thrown at the prisoner is green...what kind of football is green (Nerf)? The photos of the soldier striking a prisoner does not show any contact...staged/posed? The dogs were used for intimidation- questionable effectiveness- yes- torture no. These acts are more akin to frathouse hazing than torture. I don't see any photos of NON-COMBATANTS having their heads sawed off while they are still alive. Given the choice I'd rather keep my head and wear panties on it than to lose it altogether. But then again I am only a weak, cowardly former Special Operations SERE instructor that can't bear to see the humiliation of terrorists caught in the act of attacking US troops.

U.S. Taxpayer

Thanks Salon.com for publishing these photos. I wish more of the press would do so. What a tragedy! I can really see how the Bushies are making our tax dollars work for us. The interest is obviously accumulating evermore rapidly everyday.

Shame On Us

As a true patriot and American I am sickened, disgusted, shocked, horrified and filled with self-loathing and shame that these are things done in my name. I am even more ashamed that so few have done so little to stop these madmen from continuing....

May the bastards who perpetrated these crimes against humanity be brought to a swift and honorable justice-and they should be thanking their lucky stars that we do not exact an eye for an eye vengeance for this....

What About The Pictures We Don't See?

Consider this.

These pictures represent a miniscule fraction of what actually happened. What torturer actually allows a camera to be present. These images are from the momentary second when low-level grunts got careless and decided to take souvenir pictures, never imagining they would be found out.

Logically we know that there are millions of horrific little moments that we have carried out in Iraq and at home where immigrants are detained inside US borders. We know in our heart that far worse is off camera.

Shame on all of us. If we don't speak up now, when will we? I am not interested in punishing low-level grunts. The rot starts at the very top. Nothing short of resignation of our President will clean America's stain.

And then we wonder why the world hates us? What do you think the world thinks of us now, as these images are getting downloaded by millions of people with internet access all over the world?

Is America today a shining city on the hill, or the Guantanamo-orange symbol of shame?
