Coors attained a certain cachet among hipsters and beer-snobs alike back then, because it was "unpasteurized" which meant that it couldn't be shipped long-distance. You'd have to have a "connection" who could buy some cans in Colorado and smuggle them to you in a short time frame. I think that changed some time in the 80's.
We've been discussing lager, pilsner and ale...what about stout and porter? Will they ever make it big in the USA?
Back in the 60s, PBR sponsored the Triple Crown. As a child in the Twin Cities, (then as now home of many beers), and loving horse racing, it was kinda cool to hear about a beer that wasn't "Hamm's, the 'beer refreshing'"! Guess racing got waaaaaay too tony for Pabst. Unfortunately.
