Apparently I missed her death-panel satire, which is too bad and now quite out of date. But it's nice to see Anne Lamott back and blazing away.
You were elected because millions of people believed that you knew what to do, and we trusted you to do the right thing. The killings at Fort Hood, and the farce that is the anti-health care cadre are strong reasons why you need to show us what we all believed you had, the wisdom to do what was right, even if we didn't always agree.
IS HE REALLY LISTENING?
It seems to me that he has all of the facts on his desk, and yet he continues to hide behind the escapades of Congress. If he had the intestinal fortitude and the drive to get this done, as he has said, (rather timidly), he would be out in front leading the charge. He has got to be on the phone taking a cue from Johnson and start twisting some arms. Many of those Blue Dogs are in office because of him and they had better understand this. He has the majority of Americans on his side in this, WHY the hell isn't he driving the train? In the progressive practice of trying to get as much info on a subject in order to make the "safest" decision, he is seen as weak and capitulating. I hate to say this but take a lesson from W. and pick a position and stick to it and drive it down THEIR throats. Again he has truth, compassion and the majority of Americans on his side.
I sincerely hope he is listening. If not him then please staffer, get off your glib little ass and pass the word. Get it done now. We've got a lot more work to do. Get this off your list.

I'm hopeful someone is listening... {besides the insurance and pharma lobbies)
As usual you have got it right. I think Obama has tried the bipartisan route; it's not working, he should do the right thing, the moral thing, and make sure all Americans have health coverage. My personal preference is for Medicare for All but I realize we have to get there in increments. The talk about cost containment makes me want to scream because so much of the cost now is for insurance company underwriting, marketing, lobbying, etc., and those costs are not providing care for anyone!
Thanks for a great letter; I hope you sent it to the Preident!
On a side note, SAM IS 20 ???!!!! Wow, do I feel old. :-)
...what a bunch of morons you are, voting for a cartoon character with no provenance, drawn up by CIA front companies, Henry Kissinger and naive young adults fresh out of college.
"Nearly 70 million people voted for you because we supported your commitment to ending the war in Iraq, closing Gitmo and creating universal healthcare."
The drawdown in Iraq is proceeding ahead of the agreed-upon timeline. The order to close the Gitmo prison has been issued and the process to figure out what to do with the prisoners is underway. (You might be interested to know that the Bush admin. had no intention of ever releasing them and so they are starting from square one with each case -- it is taking longer than anticipated.) And healthcare reform is in the fourth quarter. I'm sorry this last can't happen on your schedule and that it appears Obama, himself, personally, is "dawdling"... but the negotiation to merge the various Senate bills is well underway. I don't know if you're aware, but the bill is 1500 pages, and it's pretty, well -- what's the word? -- complex. Again I apologize if this takes more than, oh, two weeks to figure out, especially considering a bunch of people in Congress actually don't want anything done and are trying to stop it or slow it down.
Meanwhile, there is a staggering array of other ongoing calamities worldwide to contend with. So I'd say, on balance, he's doing pretty well. But it's only been nine months! The world hasn't been remade into a utopia yet, and damnit, it's November! You wanna help out, call your Congressman instead of blogging on Salon about this.
The drawdown in Iraq is proceeding ahead of the agreed-upon timeline.
That's simply not true; he's doing nothing of the kind. The Administration achieved these 'reductions' by shifting city boundaries on maps:

Thank you Salon for bringing Anne Lamont back... here's a suggestion- put her up there on the banner and lose Paglia... a boy can dream.
And while you're rearranging the deck chairs, why not root around in the drawer and bring back Kamiya...
Obama invited the insurance and drug lobbyists to the table to write the healthcare 'reform' bill, and they produced a bill that would increase their present incomes while pushing any cost increases to at least 2 years into the future. Obama shook hands with the drug industry and promised his government agencies wouldn't dicker about prices, in return for a paltry promise of an $8-billion 'savings' over 10 years, most of which is purely illusory.
Obama's not a reformer - never was. Obama won't stick up for the underdog - never did. He's in bed with money and power and always was. He rose to the top of the Chicago slime pit by out-sliming his rivals.
You voted for an illusion, a sham, a figment of your imagination. Oh, he'll talk tough and shake his finger at the insurance industry, but he won't actually do anything to thwart their wishes, because they've promised him too much financial support in the next election, and threatened to transfer this support to whoever sides with them, should Obama disobey. But Obama's been onside with the crooks his whole political life, and is perfectly comfortable talking out of both sides of his mouth.
