Thank you for a beautifully written remembrance of a remarkable woman, Daniel. I'm about to search through my music collection and find this song. Odetta will be missed.
I bought that album many years ago. It had taken me months of singing to everyone a bit of a song I'd heard on a college radio station before anyone could identify it. I love the idea of having a different vocalist on each track, and their doing something unexpected.
Odetta's song is one of my favorite performances. I've always wondered about the accordianist. I assumed you weren't highly accomplished, but often it's some other quality that captivates us. Thanks for the story!
A poignant remembrance.
Curious to know if the story forming the backdrop for the song was actually true, or was it Odetta's imaginative framework.
Matters only in the"artist at her work" sense.
or you might have landed up like equally over-his-head Harry Belten performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto.
But your story reminds me very much of that great story by Barry Targan. Perhaps you could expound on it a bit :)
I saw the Odetta tribute on CBS Sunday Morning and I needed a hankie when it was over. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad I read this article. I couldn't get past the bad and hackneyed writing of the first Lemony Snicket book. I honestly thought that Daniel Handler couldn't write this well. I would be willing to give his other books a chance now.
Many years ago I heard Odetta's treatment of Cool Water and I was sold.
