Porn in a flash

A troubling surge in creepy "upskirt" photography has lawmakers in a twist -- and the body parts of women posted all over the Internet.

The letters thread is now closed.

@Teensy -- Ain't it grand

Isn't it great to live in a universe where one can hold TWO (or maybe even more) opposing viewpoints and have reasoned opinions supporting both of them? I think its really cool that the world IS NOT all black and white but contains not merely shades of GRAY but all manner of GLORIOUS COLORS as well.

Pornography IS as old as the hills.

Men ARE men and will always be men (I hope)

Women are too-- er, women that is. And like 'em or not-- it looks like you gotta live with 'em one way or the other.

And decency IS on the rocks and at great risk of going down the toilet.

And parents DON'T get to spend enough quality time with their kids and as a result are not always able to instill the level of values and morals that they may wish to-- or having been "latch-key" kids themselves, may even KNOW or have themselves.

And immature behavior SHOULD be dealt with as a social issue. I never said it shouldn't. And further wrote a whole letter clarifying my thoughts.

What is your problem here? Maybe nobody's photographing YOUR panties and posting them on the Internet...?? Is that it?

People do have a right to be secure in their person. My own personal opinion on the subject I think is this-- if you can get the "upskirt" or whatever in a public place and in a non-contorted / contrived manner-- its yours. Meaning if you go out in the park and are sitting there and able to swing your camera around to get the photos-- if anybody complains they're either being prudish or should have worn pants. Likewise, if you can stand under the subway grating and look up and get your jollies that way-- or even if you're walking down the sidewalk and the wind flips some girl's skirt up-- those are all the same thing-- you can photo what you can see in public. And while it should be uncouth, it should not be illegal.

But I think I agree that if someone goes out of their way to contrive the situation in order to get the image-- that's out of line and should be dealt with from a SOCIAL STIGMA point-of-view and suffer SOCIAL consequences. If the intrusion is more than that so as to constitute an actual assault, then its an assault and should be dealt with as such.

BUT-- all that said-- don't think for a single millisecond that men don't completely and totally understand that women put on displays and get thrills out of letting men see their panties. Maybe not all women, but enough that men definitely know and are on the lookout. And when it suits a woman's purpose its a turn-on. When it doesn't the guy's a perv. Either way the guy's just looking for a cheap thrill and is the same guy. The "perv-ish" element is in the mind of the woman, whether she liked the guy or not.

Is this wrong?

There was a man in Baltimore that would photograph women, without their permission, at downtown nightclubs. Then he would take the photos home, dissect them with PhotoShop, and paste the women's heads on to pre-existing porn, presumably porn pictures with women whose faces were not good looking enough. He would put the composite pictures on the internet, and sell them on porn sites.

Would you say, the women in the night clubs had no expectation of privacy? Since they were out in public he could take whatever pictures he wanted? Would you say, the women in the night clubs probably didn't look at porn so the chances of them ever finding out were very low, so no harm was done?

The Baltimore police did not consider it to be harmless.

Oh well

You'd think if someone was right behind you on their hands and knees with a camera snapping pictures of your crotch you'd be aware of their presence. But, women have a knack for not having a clue if someone else is around lurking in the shadows.

They need to sell panties with the bird stamped on the rear end, so at least the perpetrator gets the finger.

I do have to admit there are some interesting, and tantilizing pictures floating around on the internet depicting some fine upskirts. Oh well at least no one is recognizable.

@Phio Gistic -- Yes, its wrong

Women in a nightclub are NOT out in public, they are in a private establishment and thus in order for photographs taken of them to be published publically, model-release forms must be obtained and on-file for inspection.

Note

Women should be able to wear whatever they want in a perfect world, but why take the chance?

Women use strong shaming tactics to discourage men from wearing skintight bodysuits on the street.

Just WHO is the victim and who the perpetrator?

Yeah, right

This column struck me as one of those that find some small area of exploitation, and blow it way out of proportion. The author says there were over 10,000 flickr postings for "upskirt," but when I looked at the site, everyone I saw seemed to be posed. Same for a random viewing of upskirt web-sites that came up on a google search. Yeah, there's some pervs out there, but not nearly so much as the author would have us believe

@Mr. E

who states "Don't think for a millisecond that men don't completely and totally understand that women put on displays and get thrills out of letting men see their panties"...

No, YOU must understand, completely and totally, that women are quite selective at who gets to see what, and where. Your idea that women love to have their privacy violated is quite the standard old perv notion that women somehow (in the mind of a perv they justify it this way) like this. Yes, some women let their boyfriends or husbands see their bodies, but understand that THEY choose who sees what, sir, not you.

One thing is for certain

men remain playful and creative and women become harsh and negative as they get older.

It seems if women cannot control and commodify every aspect of their lives, monetize everything, they feel something is amiss.

That, and they hate being female, with all the sexual high and lows that that entails. I only think of the Italian women who brush leering men off and give it no more thought.
