First lady got back

I'm a black woman who never thought I'd see a powerful, beautiful female with a body like mine in the White House. Then I saw Michelle Obama -- and her booty!

The letters thread is now closed.

@VOIVOD: Great Post..but on salon she has a crew of suurogates and apologists

who will make excuses for her..She of course has no problem hiring low self esteem Black writers..i.e Erin Kaplan to level her contempt for Obama with a Black face...

BTW I have enjoyed your posts during this saga..

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 05:31 PM

During the Imus saga many writers on salon found a lot of shallow excuses for Imus

she also hired a Black writer( My advocacy was instrumental in finally getting Salon a hire a Black writer ..like what took them so long!!!.. Then they hired a tissue thin Black guy JH)..

So really Salon has a major blind spot on issues regarding Black Folks of course Joan supported Hillary to the bitter end as well..

WE have a lot of work to do here...

Now's a perfect time to ask...

"(There's a reason the Brits tell us Yanks we don't 'get' irony. :-D)"

-- galleymac

To any and all blacks out there- do you find Monty Python funny? I'm multi-ethnic, and only "get" half the humor, so, is there like, some kind of correlation there? Help me out with this...

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 05:55 PM

I find that type of humor witty at best certainly not funny..Culturally Brits lack

verve and rythm the latter is critical for timing and humor..

The Brits are our nation's original illegal aliens and domestic terrorists the true cheap euro's but I do love the Beatles!!!!!!

8 days a week..I love love love ya..

I love you yeah yeah yeah

Black is beautiful

is proven once again. Michelle Obama's other traits, such as intelligence, good judgment, gentility, stability ..., are more important, but it's good to celebrate her physical beauty as well. Over six feet tall, so well proportioned that some of us were surprised to discover how tall she is, with a beautiful face and smile--I wouldn't describe her booty as big, but high. This characteristic gives many women of African descent a particular grace.

@ Joan: You think Erin would value your thoughts??

She has a bad case of low self esteem..help a sista out..give her a call, a hug, some love..

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 08:18 PM

Hmmm

That's strange. And here I thought beauty was in the mind, not the ass. Michelle Obama is one of the classiest, smartest people on the campaign trail. This article was stupid, vapid, and demeaning and not even funny, nor ironic in any sense of the word. So much going on to report about and Salon descends to the sexist and immaterial. Salon should be ashamed.

"Oh really? Is your self esteem so damaged. Your intellect so limited. Your creativity so lacking that the most exciting thing about Michelle Obama, a Princeton and Harvard graduate, mother of two and corporate executive is her “booty?” Did all your buddies over at Salon.com tell you how clever you were? Did you feel like the very special clever Black person Erin? Did you get a gold star? I hope they paid you more than $1.25 per word, because surely selling Michelle Obama down river by chopping her up into pieces, marginalizing and dehumanizing her was worth more than a two piece and a biscuit. It gets worse."

White male checking in, and I can't

for the life of me see what could possibly be offensive about one beautiful black woman admiring another beautiful black woman. Let's all chill out and shake our white, black, red brown, yellow, and yes, purple booties to the sweet soul vibes of this lovely and troubled world in which we live.

"Is that all your Black womanhood is to you? Is your entire body image wrapped up in your caboose? Are you still waiting for ratification of your beauty from the general populace? Has watching all those hours of Bob Beelzebub Johnson’s Black Exploitation Television fried each and every one of your brain cells?"

So It's Not A Black Thang, After All

Thanks, fromPhilly, for pointing us to statements from other African-Americans who are as appalled by this travesty as the rest of us. That goes a long way toward refuting the apologists here who have taken the bizarre position that Kaplan's ass fetish is some sort of feminist race-positive statement.

I know that argument by analogy has already been done nearly to death here but I wonder what the reaction would have been in 1991 to a statement by a young African-American man that he felt vindicated by the appointment of a big-lipped black man to the Supreme Court.

How embarrassing

So the first lady has a huge butt and that has you excited? I hope the Obama's bring more class to the White House than you have, Ms. Kaplan.

Obnoxious

This essay does not belong on Salon. You are not edgy, and I am not uptight. Here we've been trying to keep looks out of the political race, and Salon goes and shows a photo and an ode to the First Lady's rump. PLEASE.

We can all appreciate the visual impact and phenomenal importance of having a new kind of First Role Model without this. On a personal blog, fine, but on Salon, it's obnoxious and demeaning.

First Lady Got Back - YES!!!

Loved the article on Michelle Obama - Yes, she has back! As a white man married to a black woman (and certainly "down with the swirl"!) I can safely say that I noticed Michelle's "back" immediatly. She is the hottest First Lady ever! (Even more so that Jackie Kennedy. And I never though anyone would top her!). The Sweet Chocolate Ice Cream!

Disrespectful, Racist and Sexist

Ms. Kaplan, how would you feel if, say, a noted expert stopped by your offices to give the Salon staff a presentation on the future of online journalism and afterwords one of your senior executives walked up to you and said:

"Wow, her presentation was good, but did you see that phat ass!"

Yeah, that's how I felt after reading your trashy essay.

This Isn't a Quality Opinion Piece

Please don't publish doggerel like this again.

There are black writers with something to say, this Kaplan woman has nothing to say and is an embarrassment to the race.

Thanks,

ricland
