Reading the responses to this article has made it obvious how little so many, particularly white Americans, understand about the experiences and perspectives of those outside mainstream America and most importantly their own assumptions and behaviour.
The writer was actually pointing that out. There has been a glaring absence of aspirational dark skinned black female figures (outside entertainment) who actually look like a regular black woman.
I wonder how the white media would have reacted had Michelle and the kids worn natural afros or braided their hair for the later public appearances.
Now the white readers may get annoyed whenever a black author points this out, but these are the kind of thing that white can afford to take for granted. So stop over reacting in such a scripted and predictable manner.
The Obama presidency is going to be a learning experience fro you folks. He has formally upset the assumptions about intelligence, patriotism of African Americans or dark skinned people with Muslim names.
Many of the people (surprisingly large number of men) here who are offended are the same ones who keep describing Sarah Palin as hot or criticising Cindy McCain as a Martian or commenting on Baracks supposed athleticism and ball skills or John McCains apparent physical decline.
I think think most black people (myself and many I have asked) read that article laughed knowingly.
My advice, get over yourselves.
