A call to arms

How to handle the fury brought on by this election? Register voters, hit the streets, pray. Stop talking about her. Talk about Obama.

The letters thread is now closed.

Ms. Lamott, can you give me a more specific target?

I gave the maximum amount to Barack Obama before the nominaion, and then, as is legal,

I again gave the maximum amount after he was nominated.

So I'm stymied as to contributing more. i would like to donate money to a Democratic

organization which registers new voters. Do you know of such a Democratic organization?

Rage against the Machine

I found the only way I could stop my own downward spiral of rage and despair was to switch off the TV and radio. I now limit myself to no more than 10 minutes of ranting per day. Today's rant took place at the local coffee shop, and was overheard by another woman in line. We then engaged in a very satisfactory joint rant about McSame and She Who Will Not Be Named. I felt so much better. And then I went and donated some more money. I think it's no coincidence that the Obama campaign raised more money this month than ever before.

Prayer won't help

Obama and everyone who follows him thought his ego and arrogance were going to carry the election. When McCain did what he does best, which is what no one expects, and picked Sarah Palin for VP, it became apparent that Obama's ego and arrogance just won't cut it. Obama will lose.

Thank you Anne LaMott!

Thank you thank you! I've been heading into a scary downward spiral over this insanity and wondering what might help, and wondering where in the hell is Anne Lamott when I need her. So lo and behold, she was busy writing! I feel a little better but I have a feeling I'm going to need to keep coming back for more sense and wisdom. You're it, so keep writing for us.

Thank you

Thank you for expressing so well the sheer rage I've been feeling for the past two weeks.

"They are everything He or She hates in a Christian."

Oh.My.

God does not hate them. If God hates anything, God hates their hurtful policies and actions. God also probably isn't very fond of hateful words. Probably hates those, too. I can't think of anything more dehumanizing than to suggest that God hates someone. I realize that line is probably just a bit sloppy - probably the Jesuit meant that what they stand for theologically and politically is what God hates in a Christian. But then again, does that mean God hates progressive policies (or progressive Christians, or politicians, or voters) when they wind up hurting people too? Or is that just what happens when a Republican gets it wrong?

My first instinct is to agree with the idea that God hates the politics of the opposition, because that idea of God makes me feel better about myself. It lines up nicely with my view of the world. But who the hell am I, or a Jesuit, or Ms. Palin, or Ms. Lamott to presume to know the mind of God? It's the progressive Christians who are supposed to be able to admit that we're acting on guesswork when it comes to understanding what God wants, right? My second instinct is to suggest that while I expect God very much cares about what happens to people as a result of this election, God is infinitely and immensely bigger than these feelings of fear and anger and - let's be honest here - dehumanizing hatred.

As a progressive Christian, I feel horribly betrayed when my conservative brothers and sisters deny my faith and reject my fellowship on the grounds of theological and political differences. I'm not about to do the same to them.

Sounds like Ms. Palin is not the only person around who is full of rage.

What if he doesn't win?

What will happen? Rage? Collapse? Rebellion? I've honestly considered it. I am damn angry and am watching a legitimate candidate possibly get beat by some old crank who has no clue what he's talking about.

Is there any possibility that the checks and balances of our great nation reject the people's choice if we choose incorrectly?

Stop the Madness

They stole my Obama sign and the local campaign office is out of them and my online order is taking forever and damn it when I get my new signs I'm gonna hoodoo them so nobody better DARE TOUCH THEM and Saturday when i was registering voters at the Salvation Army a skinhead-ish creep told me he was voting for McCain and "for that other one, I got a bullet" and after years in the halfway rational Midwest I live in Georgia where my newspaper editorial page is a bitter cup of hatred every single morning and DAMN IT WE CANNOT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH ALL THIS LYING AND CHEATING AGAIN!

Not again. Never again.

So, thanks. I needed that.

"Ego and arrogance ?"

And these terms are being used in reference to Obama, of all people??

If there are two words that exist that are more descriptive of the current G.O.P. than the ones listed above, I'm not aware of them.

This is the ego and arrogance that allow a party to nominate a person who, by almost every reasonable metric that exists, is screamingly unfit to be vice-president, much less president.

Obama, driven by ego and arrogance? Puh-leeze.

Kudos to you, Anne, for a lovely piece.

It is not McCain/Palin that upsets me

what upsets me, galls me and frustrates me to no end is the stupidity and ignorance, sheer ignorance, of the american people!

You would think after the nightmare of the past 8 years and what Bush has wrought on us along with his henchmen and cronies that people would have smartened up a little.

But, no.

they are willfully staying ignorant and falling for the same old things again and again. Believing the most ridiculous and insane things and never questioning or using common sense.

Why? I keep asking myself this. Why? Why are people so stubborn in their determination to stay ignorant, keep voting the same rotten way for the same rotten people who will go on hurting the country and the people.

When are people going to finally have enough and stop being so stupid.
