A new raft of chastity books laments a hookup culture that is hurting young women. As one of those young women, I beg to disagree.
  • Hook-Up Sex

Tracy...I'm so much older than you that there are at least three generations between us. Because I am a mother of two young women, one who just graduated from Vassar College, I am more than interested in trying to understand what young women feel about their relationships with men, themselves, sex and other women. So, I read your article with great interest and I walked away from the experience feeling as if I was a fish out of water.

I've been married for so many years that the years that I have been married is almost double your age. As I have aged and matured over the years, I managed to discover who I am and what makes me happy and I also learned how to be sexually alive despite my long-standing relationhsip. It is difficult for me not to think that your and other young women's experience with "hook-up" sex leaves a lot to be desired. I'd love to be able to talk to you about your experiences, that is the nature of your hook-ups, after you turn fifty but I'm certain that I'll be a non-living anachronism at that time. Tracy, I have learned that life is a series of events and if we, as people, are lucky we'll share some of those experiences with other people who respect and care for us. People from my generation, boomers or the "love peace and happiness generation" view and understand sex and making love as two distinct and not interchangable concepts or activities. I sincerely hope that the young women that I have raised and taught over the years invest themselves into their lives where they can experience meaningful and fulfilling relationships and that they also experience fulfilling sex lives. All of these things, just like your dedication to getting a college degree, requires an investment of your time, patience and diligence.

Good luck to you Tracy...somehow I feel that you have a lot of maturing to do.
