Officially the "rich bullies"?!
The Red Sox are the official new rich bullies? What's so official about it? I believe we are to assume that the Yankees are the old rich bullies, right? Because formerly they had the highest payroll in baseball. So who has the highest payroll in baseball now? Uh, the Yankees. And who paid the huge money for A-Rod when all of his millions weren't enough? Oops. The Yankees. Who just paid about a billion a piece for a lineup full of old men? The Yankees. And whose farm system produced Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Clay Buckholtz? The Boston Red Sox.

Talking about the curse was fun.
I'm not a huge sports fan at all, but being from Newton (Pronounced New-in with a glotteral (sp?) stop in the middle), I generally support the Boston teams... Sox, Bruins, Breakers, Patriots, Revolution... if I happen to see that they won in the paper, I'm glad, but don't go out of my way to watch them unless someone gives me a free ticket.
But it WAS fun, when we had guests in from Europe, to explain baseball to them, and to tell them all about our cursed team, which they had never heard of, being from Europe and all. It was fun to tell them the whole legend, No No Nanette and all. To explain to them about the graffiti on that sign on the bridge that Storrow goes under, where it said "reverse curve" and someone put a "the" in the middle and replaced the "v" with an "s"... you know what I'm talking about Bostonians? Not too far from if you lived here you'd be home by now?
Baseball is boring. Curses are fun!

I love the winning Red Sox
Yankees are still more rich than the Red Sox. But they're more stupid.

You've got to be kidding me.
Really?! Really?! I've never read something more incorrect and off base in my whole life. My friends and family about 50 MA residents who are fiercely loyal to all things Red Sox, could not be more ecstatic that our teams are doing so well. WHO are these people you're talking to? Every MA fan I have talked to is PSYCHED that the Pats are doing so well, is over come with joy that the Sox won again and is in disbelief that the Celtics and the Bruins seem to be following suit. We are SALIVATING at the thought of next years baseball season.
We have suffered for years on end with losing teams and could not be happier that we're finally seeing some victory.
And Beantown? Really? No self-respecting Bostonian would refer to home as Beantown. You're clearly a transplant. Who are your friends? I'd like to talk to them about what it means to be a fan in Boston.

Yankees Hats
Is it just me, or are an awful amount of kids wearing Yankees hats around Boston these days?
I first noticed it in 2004 when I was working in a school. Then I saw it more and more. There are an AWFUL LOT of Yankees hats around Boston.
Are they rebellious? Are they transplants? Is the magic gone?
Look around... I guess the T isn't a good barometer as it is full of tourists, but stand outside Snowden or someplace when it lets out...

To win or not
I don't agree with everything in this article and being in Chicago I don't know the state of mind of the Boston sports fans, but I must say I understand what he's trying to get at. When the Cubs were on the brink of the Series in '03 I had a conversation with my brother and we both admitted being somewhat befuddled ... happy, but befuddled. Our Cubs in the World Series?? It was not an unhappiness but more a strange shift in the way the universe worked, and we didn't know how to act. Of course, the Cubs being the Cubs we never had to figure out how to act (and I say that with no joy)

Editor Needs to Do More Exploring of Boston
I don't know whether it's because you moved here and assumed too much of Boston or New England like all tourists assume when they come to the Northeast. You honestly think we rather have our teams lose than win? Where are you getting your information, buddy? Going to the gym? Any fan here would know we're in the midst of something that probably won't happen again anywhere in the country for long time. I understand it because I know the Patriots won't be what they are now sooner or later and such (I still wouldn't mind if they kept winning). All of our teams are basically winning and we're proud that we have a Randy Moss, a Kevin Garnett, or a Josh Beckett. Heck, you could even call us spoiled. Read your article again and and read the quotes you got from your friends. There's not one quote where another fan says the opposite. And if your friends really feel that way, being nostalgic, then they're not Boston fans. Of course, it is. But it's finally time for us to win and we're winning over everyone else. I mean, other than that, your friends meant that they miss the old teams but they still can appreciate the winning now. If we Boston fans shrugged at you and gave you the wrong impression about the teams winning, it's because we're used to it. What do you expect us to do? Celebrate the entire year? We celebrate when they win a title and we're proud of getting 5 titles in Boston sports in the last 6 years. Stop making so much assumptions like the rest of the country is.

One more thing...
Don't forget the New England Revolution MLS soccer team that not only went into the post-season but managed to play in the championship match--a rematch of last year's championship game as well.

Having fun -- wish you were here
I think what you are taking as misery is more disbelief. Many Boston sports fans may still be a bit shocked at the success of our teams. But unhappy? Not at all. I asked someone before the 2004 series if Boston fans would be happy if the team won -- how much of our fiber is wrapped up in the angst of being not just the long time losers , but the anguish in which we lose. The answer I got was we would be happy, because we would finally be able to just enjoy the game. We would be able to have fun. And you know what? He was right. The post season was fun this year -- watching the kids make their marks, watching the leadership of Lowell and Veritek, watching the antics of Manny and the heroics of Ortiz. The sense of need was gone, it was a game again. And it was fun. Oh, and at the parade -- everyone was really happy.
Is it possible you took a wrong turn and are actually in New York?
