  • boston fans

I lived for 40 years minutes outside of Boston and I think Steve is onto something. I sat stunned as opposed to excited at the first world series win. I wait fearfully each week to see if the Patriots will drop the ball. And I stopped keeping track of the other sports because, who cares, they suck...this way there are no disappointments right? Just the right to say I knew it and I told you so...

So to help his buds and the rest of city through these difficult, confusing and stressful times he needs to remind these guys that a sweep of Major League Sports championships is not possible this year...

Boston lost in the finals of the MLS (major league soccer) a week ago....

I knew they would; didn't I tell you so?

  • I beg to differ...

I am a Buckeye born and bred. Not a Buckeye fan, a BUCKEYE. I bleed Scarlet and Gray and I never refer to that team up North by name. To do so would cause me to vomit uncontrollably and to touch anything maize and blue or emblazoned with the M(for moron) burns like acid and fire combined. For 13 agonizing years, I watched my Buckeyes have the best team in the country no less than 3 times only to lose to the hated Wolverines and see another Big Ten title and National Championship vanish. Now that that turd of a coach John Cooper is gone, we are dominating the Big Ten and the Maized and Confused (thank you Appalachin State) and it is great. I love it. I'm never dissatisfied with my Buckeyes because even when they lose, the effort is always there. Enduring the 13 years of torture has only made these last 7 years that much greater. Red Sox fans should feel that way tenfold because it has been far longer since their team won a championship. The Pats are one of the best teams in recent years and the Celtics might win a title this year if they continue their stellar play. The Bruins on the other hand, we'll have to wait and see. But really, how can they complain? Winning is great!! Dominating your rival is great!! Get with it Boston!! Rejoice!!

  • make a choice, Salon

The purpose of sports journalism is to be

    a) controversial

    b) accurate

It looks like you've chosen a).

It's pretty easy to stir up controversy by calling an entire 6-state region of sports fans masochists. It is not, however, true.

More to the point: if you are trying to bolster your argument, quoting somebody who yearns for the Larry Bird years doesn't help you much, does it? Did Steve Almond pay any attention to basketball in the 1980s? A lot of Celtics fans continue to revere Bird and his championship era. Can Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and company achieve the same level of success? I don't know, but the prospect is exciting, not tiresome.

Aside from Dan Shaughnessy, nobody in the greater Boston area believes in this kind of garbage theory.

  • the article

    To whom it may concern,

Just because you have a problem with Boston teams winning doesn't mean everyone else does. I've got three words for you GET OVER IT!

It's nice to see the Red Sox win they derserved it.

For the Patriots, well there's not enough words to decribe how great they are. Everyone is just jealous that the Patriots are that good.

The Celtics, well I'm not a big fan of basketball but I can say good for them.

The Bruins, I love that team and just because they get screwed most of the time with bad afficiating doesn't mean they derserve the bad talk they get.

I'm just sick and tired of people bad mouthing the Boston teams. If and/or when they win it's great.

You're not a true Boston sports fans if you talk bad about them winning.

  • Totally off Base

You have to be kidding! It's not like that at all. Now that we won 2 World Series I think most fans are thankful we finally got over the hump. Now most have the attitude like Manny, "If we don't win, then there is always next year. I don't think you have been around Boston too long and your friends need to get out and be with real fans when they are watching the games because they are definitely giving you the wrong impression.

  • What kind of Boston sports fans are these?

I have watched the Red Sox lose, win, trade away good players, all that, and I still think they are one of the best teams out there. The only game I ever watched at Fenway, in 2000, they lost, but I didn't care! I was at fabled Fenway Park! Later that summer, I went to the other oldest baseball stadium in the country, Wrigley Field in Chicago.

I grew up in Southern California, where I watched the Dodgers, the (California)Angels and the NBA Lakers with my dad. When I was young I hated the Celtics, but liked Larry Bird (probably because he was the only really good white guy playing basketball at the time). I still root for my hometown teams, even though I haven't lived there in 20 years, which made this years AL Divisional Series so hard for me... who do I root for, the Angels or the Red Sox?

I know that long time Boston sports fans have this love/hate relationship with their teams, but come on now, ALL your teams are winning! That's a rare feat in itself that all of a city's pro and college teams are doing so well. If I were still living in Boston, I'd gladly go broke trying to see all of them play at least once (and I've never been a big hockey fan, so that says a lot!). But, since I'm not, I'll proudly wear my Red Sox ballcap here in Oklahoma City, and cheer on everyone on!

    So there!

  • Reversal of downtrowden to Bullies

Steve Almond is either inadvertatly or purposfully trying to fill the void he claims Boston fans are suffering. I'm sure some Boston fans have been waiting for someone to write an article like this. It fits into the victims mentality that Mr. Almond is alluding to. As a Yankee fan, I've always noted how Redsox fans were so angry and bitter, and amazingly arrogant before 2004. I for one was happy to see them win only because now we can finally have them shut up about their "holy" suffering team always being "cheated" out of winning. Now they can take their rightful place as the team they really are like the Patriots, bullies who need to be put back in their place where they belong.
