I know how Ellen DeGeneres feels: My adventures with private dog shelters convinced me that years of rescuing animals sometimes turns people into self-righteous tyrants.

  • "I don't really think the stakes are high enough in this instance to give Ellen DeGeneres an easy way out."

And still you don't give a damn about the little girl. It's all about making Ellen pay -- even though she's not the one paying at all, it's the little girl who's the victim -- just like the monster at Mutts & Moms. Utterly heartless.

And, no, honoring contracts isn't a fetish, but, as usual, that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about your attitude toward "the rules" which can accurately be described as fetishistic, as in the sense of blind devotion. It doesn't matter that rules can be changed by the person who made them, it doesn't matter that contracts can be amended, it doesn't matter that the monster could have acted out of good will instead of malice. It doesn't even matter that little girls get hurt by needless cruelty.

What matters to you is only the myth that there was a sacrosanct agreement that could never be altered.

To quote myself, shame on you.

I'm not sure about all these claims of the shelter entering the house under false pretense or whatever.

Then perhaps you should first take two minutes to learn what you're talking about before you voice an opinion.

  • Conservative v. liberal

On the other topic being discussed here on this thread...I don't think it's conservative or liberal behavoir. What is being demonstrated is better described as authoritarian, and it does happen on both the left and right.

  • Had good and bad experiences

I've had good and bad experiences with pet adoption. The bad was with a no-kill private shelter. After I didn't meet their "standards" when I inquired about adopting TWO adult cats, I was truly horrified. I pledged never to give them another dime - and then reconsidered since I know they do perform an often thankless task. I now know that my experience was not unique and that is why these shelters have so many animals. How sad that they make their very difficult task even harder.

On the other hand, I ended up adopting two cats from an MSPCA shelter and also have had good experiences with the local Humane Society. All the workers were wonderful. And there certainly are good private shelters too.

  • the letters

are piling up and I can't stop reading them! I'm ignoring my own poor dog. This is crazy. Like 200 letters on this subject. Why does anyone think that is? Seriously.

  • @Anonymous: childhood is a long series of heartbreaks

...and the little girl will get over it. I wouldn't go so far as to say I don't give a damn about her, but let's just say I'm not losing a lot of sleep over her future. Her mom's a hairdresser to celebrities. She's probably well provided for. She'll probably even get another dog. I'm sure she'll do just fine.

  • Forever-Home This!

Righton! And it ain't just LA!

Here in Chicago, the animal rescue organizations are rife with self-righteous prigs!

  • mini-despots

There is no kind of person that I hate more than the kind who lets their power over an inifinitely small piece of the world get to their head.

Doormen at clubs are the most common abusers of this nano-power. I will add people who run private dog shelters to the list.

  • "...the remote diagnosis by letter writers of the little girl's suitability as a pet owner..."

Because Ellen DeGeneres would of course give a puppy to a family that was incapable of caring for it and then tell Mutts & Moms that she gave the dog to a new home and then tell them exactly who they were and where they could be found. After all, she's only a world-famous celebrity so who would ever find out?

Not even Mutts & Moms is saying the family was unfit, only that 11 and 12 year old children shouldn't be part of a family raising a pet, as if that made any sense at all.

P.S. to lexicon -- best laugh of the day!

  • Bad faith

I'm not sure about all these claims of the shelter entering the house under false pretense or whatever.

That's the thing...it does appear they did that.

The new owners (albeith not through the right channels) made the mistake of contacting Mutts and Moms themselves to do everything correct...to make things right. They filled out the forms online and agreed to an in home inspection.

Mutts and Mom's came there not to see if they were suitable (the spirit of the contract) but to remove the dog. I have no idea if they were good people/good dog owners, but neither do Mutts and Mom's, because they weren't interested in anything other than asserting their rights and showing Ellen that she should be punished for her actions.

Personally, though the letter of the law may be on their side, they were idiots and did more to hurt their cause than help it.

  • AnnieW, Has Ellen ever wept on TV about the war?

Look, I'm a pet lover too, but crying on your tv show about this particular situation . . . I just don't get it. I think it's crazy to be so worked about it. I'm not saying you can't care about pets and people at the same time. I'm not saying there shouldn't be pet food aisles in grocery stores. I'm saying we are so goddamned powerful and wealthy in this country that we have no clue about what a real problem is. This dog thing ain't a real problem in the larger scheme of things. It shouldn't make adults cry, for god's sake, not when their eyes are dry over any number of human atrocities being done in our name. This is the sort of thing that is emblematic of a society gone batty; yes, Rome before the fall.

  • Spell check

Wow, I wish that I could correct my spelling errors on my last two posts...

    Oh well.

  • "Her mom's a hairdresser to celebrities."

I stand corrected. It isn't that you have a fetish for the rules. It's that you have envy of celebrities. And if a little girl is hurt in the process of a celebrity getting their imaginary comeuppance, so be it. Life is pain.

    Yeah, that's not heartless.

And you obviously have no idea that non-celebrities and non-executives in the entertainment industry -- regular, everyday working people like hairdressers -- are very, very far from rich. They're just working people who happen to work around celebrities. So the good news is you don't have to be envious of Ellen's hairdresser, as well.
