Raised to worship the New York Times on Sundays, I found myself going to church and praying instead. I thought a lot about God and flesh and blood -- and didn't tell my friends I was becoming a religious freak.

  • What Sara Gets

It's not about her, it's about Jesus and his teachings.

Judgement is...well, you know the quote.

Some things are beyond explanation, which is what drives the atheists - particularly scientists - crazy. What I find amusing is the many ways in which religion and science don't clash but mix.

Years ago I had a terrible nightmare. I was near waking, so this was a REM dream. And it was affecting my heart and blood pressure. In the dream I was pursued by something truly awful, something that - within my dream - I was sure would kill me if it caught me. I ran and ran and ran, and then finally thought "Enough. It's my time to go." And I dropped down upon my knees and said aloud (in the dream) "Thy will be done."

In that moment, and probably for the first time in my life, I threw myself upon the will of Christ. I said, in effect, that even if this meant my death, then I accepted it.

    What happened?

In my dream I was bathed in a bright light. I felt something flow through me and at the thing that was chasing me. And then the thing was gone, and in that moment I felt the greatest "warm-fuzzy" I've ever felt in my life. It was almost sexual. I awoke immediately, and I was covered in sweat and my heart was not pounding but trip-hammering.

I need not see the wounds in His hands or the wound in His side. I was given the greatest gift imaginable when I let loose those words "Thy will be done." I was given the gift of proof. I will never doubt again.

  • heh

wow, given some of the dreams I experience, I'm glad I don't see them as "the gift of proof."

I'm sure that dream felt/i> "beyond explanation" to you. But do you really expect that it seems so from another's perspective?

  • The Myth of Athiest Persecution by the Christians

You are clueless - there are a large number of Americans that belong to fundamental variations of Christianity that are very nasty to non-Christians and to their fellow Christians if they happen to be liberal.

I am not an atheist (you might need to learn how to spell), but a member of the pagan community, we are very private about our believes and try to avoid conflict with the majority - but I've had my child asked in the school yard of her public school if she was saved by another child, and informed that some of the kids were not allowed to play with her, because she was not saved.

I live in the very liberal Pacific NW. My friends who had to go South (Atlanta) for military duty, were living in very nice off base housing - in an apartment complex, and were informed that the complex had a bible study group for all the kids in the compound. Turns out if the kid didn't belong to the bible group none of the other kids would play with you - the poor boy was completely isolated, and his folks never mentioned their religion, for all the other parents knew he could have been a liberal Christian who just didn't like their brand of religion.

My job, my ability to get custody in divorce proceedings, my ability to get housing, can be threatened, and made difficult if I go public about my religion, because Christians very much enjoy going into the mode of the righteous. And since 85% to 90% of all Americans identify themselves as Christian (depending on the poll read) it is completely insane for them to say they are being persecuted, because the only ones who could be persecuting them are their fellow Christians, but the conservative Christians are unable to get it into their head the folks that are blocking them from bring on the 2nd coming, are their own liberal brethren - their fellow Christians, who think they are insane, and making the majority of Christians look bad.

  • So sick, so very sick

She seems severely mentally ill and needs therapy and strong medications. She should not keep custody of her daughter. The idea that she has written and published another stupid book on religion is simply incredible.

  • Get a grip.

You are clueless - there are a large number of Americans that belong to fundamental variations of Christianity that are very nasty to non-Christians and to their fellow Christians if they happen to be liberal.

Dude, get a grip. My message was titled as to sarcastically present the (equally legit) inverse of a titled message by one of your co-vulgarians, which interestingly and conveniently you found no fault with.

Yes, I know there are nutty fundamentalist Christians that "bother" you presumably because they pursue a political agenda that opposes your own. By and large though Christians are NOT bothering you - unless say you go trolling for them to insult them and their deeply held personal beliefs - and then whine when you get a little back.

Most importantly you've now been told by dozens and dozens of articulate, minding-their-beeswax Christians that also happen to be left-leaning loyal Democrats that you are not only offending them , but that you are aiding the religious right in their presentation that liberals are anti-Christian . You should listen because it's true. You superior athiests are by far your own worst enemies in terms of accomplishing anything much besides blowing hot air at the converted. And you call US stupid. Sheesh.

  • no name, you're a riot

some of your most notable quotes:

    "...sixteen blathering idiots..."

"...all the other obnoxious innuendo your type has been spewing consistently."

    "...your condescending blatherings."

"...Get some therapy so you can deal with it."

"...alienating everyone you can like true idiots."

"... what makes you think the rest of us are interested in your whiney, crybaby opinion?"

    "...STFU indeed"

    and then- drumroll please!-

"So I would suggest that you angry athiest types may well want to trade in some of your (not so) impressive rationality for some good manners ."
