Letters to the Editor

Letters posted here are associated with the following article:
Raised to worship the New York Times on Sundays, I found myself going to church and praying instead. I thought a lot about God and flesh and blood -- and didn't tell my friends I was becoming a religious freak.

  • Gee, No Name

Did you miss the part about common ground? Jobs, health care, opposition to war, etc. Yeah, that part was good. But, I also spent a lot of time in the basement of my grandfather's church. Yes, the congregants talked a lot about feeding the hungry, helping the sick and resolving family conflicts, but they also talked a lot about how Catholics were not really Christians, how atheists were not really American citizens and shouldn't be here, and how black people were not quite the same as whites. Also, I volunteered for 3 hours every Thursday for two years at a local church that had a great meals and food distribution program. One day, a woman I had known for the entire two years asked me what my religion was. I told her that I preferred not to discuss such things, but she pressed me, and I told her I was an atheist. Three weeks later, I was requested to leave the program in writing. "Your continued Godless presence is inimical to the goals of this ministry". Not something I'll forget.

  • it's amazing how many people here are jewish

but don't say so. SAY SO! nobody's going to kill you (yet). LeCastor and Dayenu and most probably(Victoria L) and possibly sara miles. Hey! you are my PEOPLE! that means: you are not going to kill my children BECAUSE they are jewish. that's all. but that's enough. Take a poll of the World. Ask: "Would the world be better with or without Jews." Jews will say "over 50% percent will say without" gentiles will demur. (gentiles *always* demur). Wake Up Jews! Dayenu is your FRIEND LeCastor!

    Raised atheist, but me too.

  • re: Alex

This is the crux of the religious mindset - in order to be confirmed in your belief, you have to think that deep down, everyone actually believes in god, and those who claim not to are actively 'denying' him because of pride or whatever.

I think you hit the nail on the head, except in most of these letters it seems to be ignorance of Christianty that is assumed, rather than pride. all the "if you only took the time to read the bible and/or pray and/or open your heart to Jesus, you would get it." They can't comprehend that other people see all that as BS, because if they did, they would have to admit that it might just be BS.

  • interesting, "Alex", you're a minority here

a protestant member of the ruling class. how can i tell? your attitude. what attitude? you *deserve* your place. deserved just by being born. it's nice. lots of jews want it. they will even MARRY "your" women to attain it. Foolish. marry your rejects because they are tall and blond. such is Life in America.

  • Those who don't say so...

...probalby don't because the only way in which they're Jewish is the messed-up contradictory 'blood' definition that the Orthodox crowd came up with to keep a monopoly on Jewish identity and to keep more of us from assimilating and falling away from the flock. What does one's ethnicity have to do with an article about religion? Sorry to break it to you, but my Jewishness doesn't define me. And if you think that all the gentiles around are out to kill us, I've got a lovely volcano insurance package I'd like to sell you.

  • Hilarious!

I posted my article before i saw your followup where you claimed I was a protestant member of the ruling class. Sorry, buddy - Ukranian Jew all the way, unfortunately.

Your paranoia is exactly what makes Jews become self-hating.

OTOH, I don't see Dayenu as a friend at all. In my experience, he is a fascist supporter of ethnic cleansing, mass torture and mass murder who knows pathetically little of the actual history of the thing he claims to support.

  • DZ

wow. just wow. I have never experienced anything like that and it must just be gut wrenching. This is the kind of thing that needs to be told whenever anyone whines about "happy holidays," or how atheists need to just "STFU" as someone here charmingly put it. I hope the "Christians are so persecuted" segment here reads your letter.

  • David Sugarman

Kudos. I do enjoy the passionate ones.

I apologize for my post regarding Dayenu. It was ill advised and irresponsible. He and I have done battle, but there has to be a better way. Whatever problems i have with Israel these days, the Israelis do have a way. You, me , Dayenu, Alex and others get together on Sunday night, have some beers, scream, yell, argue, get red in the face, bang on the table, spread spittle over everything in sight, threaten each other with grievous bodily harm, and, then, at the end of the night, we shake hands, we hug and we agree to do it again next Sunday. We are what we are.

  • LOVE YOU, alex, dz, lecastor, dayenu

we're in the same boat. IQ beats numbers EVERY DAY(we hope, sometimes it doesn't). we only have each other to rely on. that's the TRUTH i've devined from the past (and future) 2000 years. God (and that's the JEWISH God) Bless you and yours. be fruitful and multiply (with JEWISH chidren)

  • Sorry dude,

but I've got too much of an Asian fetish. No Jewish kids for me (or any kids at all for that matter). Really, I don't know why Jewish culture tries so hard to keep people like me. We don't contribute much.

  • hi "alex"

if i thought you part of the "protestant ruling class" it's only because your chameleon-like imitiation was so perfect. NOT A COMPLIMENT.

  • that's ok...

...I'll take it as a compliment anyway. Better that coming off as someone desperately clinging to a pre-fashioned identity because they're afraid to form their own. If rationalist and atheist = protestant ruling class to you, you've got a lot of issues.

  • why do we love you so, "alex"?

because you are MY PEOPLE. it's that simple. jews are a genetic group. you belong just by being. it doesn't matter if you prefer asians. FINE! just ASK her. if she loves you, she'll convert, like Ruth. we just love you for BEING! (where else can you get that besides parents?) really. once you said you were a jew from the yugozaponikrei, you could have been my brother(don't get along with him either - but he's still my brother)
