So long, Paris

For years we've been paralyzed in the tractor beam of her brainless celebrity. Now it's time to kiss the creepy dollie goodbye.

The letters thread is now closed.

Oh please, Mihoshi, America is not made up of Paris Hiltons on one hand, and people who can't afford to drive to the library on the other. Get off it.

I can judge whomever I damn well please. I say she's a useless skank. I work for my money and I pay taxes - therefore, I have the right to judge whomever I want. IF you don't like it, too bad.

Yes, you can judge whoever you want to judge. It's part of being individually free to do whatever you want. Paris Hilton has the same freedom. My point is that you're being hypocritical by demanding that because of her wealth, she must not do what she wants to do. Let me explain to you why:

1) I laughed out loud when i read your bit about "working for your money and paying taxes"

a) Paris hilton earns money too. She gets paid to be in TV shows, movies, for her CD, to appear at parties, and promote products. And it's income that she pays taxes on. Just like you.

b) I guess those of us who don't work, don't have the right to judge. Old people, disabled people, students, stay-at-home parents, and so on.

2) You're posting letters on here too, asshole. You're passing judgments on people too, asshole. Take a long, hard look at yourself before talking shit on some random website. You are no better than I am.

You're right that you and I are both wasting our privileged time arguing with each other instead of helping the poor, or whatever else YOU think Paris should be doing with her time. Simply by the mere fact that you have a computer, an internet connection, and can read and write, you are more wealthy than about 80% of the rest of the world. You demand that Paris is a waste of space unless she uses her privilege to do something good with it, but you don't demand the same of yourself. I don't demand it of her, or of me. It's called consistency.

3) why are you passing judgments on the American population? Isn't it the average American's right to sit around, eat trans-fatty snacks, watch TV, and be ignorant of the world around them? How is their decision any better than Paris's decisions? Who the hell are you to judge the Americans who do these things? Aren't they just as free to do what they want as Paris is? Why does Paris get a free pass from you?

a) exactly. it's the same thing. i don't think one was worse than other. that's why i wrote " I'd say that she's acting no worse than Joe and Jane Nascar."

b) there's a difference between stating facts (the obesity, transfat, tv watching, and simpsons-supreme court thing are all facts), and calling someone a "useless skank."

4) And while I'm still asking questions, why is it that every foreigner thinks that Americans are near millionaires? A lot of people actually DON'T have the opportunity to mosey on to a library and read books for an entire evening. Most people actually have to WORK for a living - an eight hour day, five days a week (not including people who may work twice as much just to make a decent living). If you think for one SECOND that the majority of Americans are living in decadent wealth, then you are painfully deluded.

Ah, lard-ass, so you hate rich people AND foreigners? Charming. I'm a US citizen, I live in the US, and your ignorant stereotyping of "foreigners" really shows your true colors.

Maybe, if you would actually read those books on European history you wouldn't judge "them foreigners" so quickly. Secondly, most people do live near a library. Thirdly, as is evidenced by your mere ability to post here, you have a computer and the internet (something the overwhelming majority of the rest of the world does not), so you could read about European history, or pretty much anything else you want to read about (you're not censored like people in Iran, china, saudi arabia).

5) She doesn't have to worry about gasoline, she has a car (probably plenty) and she has time to spare. She could be doing, as you say, joining the fucking Peace Corp and making a difference in this world, but NOOOOOOO. She gets to party all day and night, treat people like shit, spread rumors about her friends all over the fucking media and we're supposed to just sit back and take it because 'it's her life'.

"take it"? what is she doing to you that you have to bear, my mini-marx? you sound like you're overflowing with (a) jealousy, and (b) class warfare. And i think that's really the crux of the problem for you. All your rationalizations and random-foreigner bashing isn't going to mask it. Hating her for something that's clearly not her fault -- being born into wealth -- is not any more rational than hating someone for having blue eyes.

PS Something to help you start your journey of internet-based learning: the proper usage of who vs. whom.

Morality vs. Legality

Kalliope, I think i see your point, but here's my question. What are you (us, we, society) gonna do about it?

Here's how I see it. We've decided that as a society we're going to put actions into categories depending on how bad we think those actions are:

1) Crimes - so bad that if you do them, we make you give up your freedom.

2) Torts - not like crimes, but if you do them, you have to compensate those you hurt.

3) Fines - parking tickets & such. Government has prohibited them, but you only pay, no imprisonment.

4) Public Health - not torts, not crimes, but we allow the government to discourage people from doing them, like unsafe sex and smoking and obesity.

5) Legal - no punishment at all! not giving up your seat to an elderly person on the bus, cutting in line, partying when you're extremely wealthy. We let people choose, and the government can't interfere.

6) Protected - this behavior we think no one should be able to interfere with, it's so important. freedom of speech, of religion, etc. We've explicitly protected the idea that people can choose what to do or not do in these categories.

I think that "partying when you're wealthy" should stay in category 4, what do you think should happen? Feel free to add more categories. Obviously, places like Saudi Arabia place alot more of what we have in cateogry 4 into category one -- the government decided what you can and cannot do under penalty of imprisonment.
