The people vs. Courtney Love

Courtney Love -- rock star, publicity whore, feminist -- has scrapbooked her life in the spotlight. Has the self-proclaimed fame junkie lasted past her expiration date?

The letters thread is now closed.

I love Courtney

Maybe it's just cause she's so maligned, but I have always been a huge Courtney Love fan. She's the dirty blonde I am inside but am afraid to show because of the very derision she is blasted with on a daily basis. I would love to get drunk and flash my tits in some Union Square fast food joint, but I just can't do it. Too uptight I guess. I'm glad Courtney did it for me.

She's a MURDERER, people

Courtney Love, like OJ Simpson, should never be talked or written about without it being mentioned that she was responsible for the death of her spouse.

Look at the evidence. Cobain's death wasn't a suicide, and Courtney knows it.

Did you read the attached article?

No dumbo, that Courtney.

The grassy knoll

Jason,

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Courtney Love.

Who the fuck cares?

She's no rock star. How many records has Hole sold?

She's no feminist. OK, perhaps by Broadsheet's twisted standards.

I'll always regret that Kurt didn't shoot her first before he did the music world a favor.

Has Salon absolutely run out of interesting topics?

"Courtney Love: Whore" would be a better title

Seriously. Who actually thinks she's a musician and finds Hole's music anything more than pathetic noise? And if your definition of feminism is so wide as to include Courtney Love, never mind. You're fucking clueless.

SHE IS PURE EVIL

I am shocked anyone would support her.

Response to "A. Non"

You wrote:

"Seriously. Who actually thinks she's a musician and finds Hole's music anything more than pathetic noise? And if your definition of feminism is so wide as to include Courtney Love, never mind. You're fucking clueless."

Since you began your well-reasoned letter with "Seriously," I'll respond seriously: I actually think she's a musician; I actually find Hole's music to be some of the best rock music of the past twenty years, and yes, my definition of feminism is so wide as to include Courtney Love. Whether I'm fucking clueless is a matter of opinion, but most people I know don't think so.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Levy for concluding her article by extensively quoting "Awful," a song which, in approximately three short minutes, delivers just about everything one could hope for from rock 'n' roll.

In summary, I believe that Courtney has talent, heart, and passion to burn. She also appears to be somewhat nuts (perhaps NPD Cluster B? -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissistic_personality_disorder) in ways that would make it difficult to be around her. Fortunately, neither you nor I have to deal with her in person, and can instead (in my case, at least) enjoy her music and appreciate her aggressive efforts to redefine acceptable female behavior from a safe remove.

What may be must enduringly interesting about Courtney, though, is the paroxysms of rage and contempt that she inspires in people such as yourself. I wish I could say that I can't think of any other pop-culture celebrity who provokes similar responses, but in fact I can think of two off the top of my head: Yoko Ono and Sinead O'Connor. Do you see a pattern here?

I hate having a battle of wits when you're obviously unarmed, but here goes...

"I actually think she's a musician; I actually find Hole's music to be some of the best rock music of the past twenty years, and yes, my definition of feminism is so wide as to include Courtney Love. Whether I'm fucking clueless is a matter of opinion, but most people I know don't think so."

So much for your fucking clueless friends. Birds of a feather, you know.....

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Levy for concluding her article by extensively quoting "Awful," a song which, in approximately three short minutes, delivers just about everything one could hope for from rock 'n' roll."

Raise your expectations for rock and roll. Hole's song is appropriately titled. (And stop trying to write as if you were a rock critic. Or at least cite your source when you cut and paste cliches.)

"In summary, I believe that Courtney has talent, heart, and passion to burn. She also appears to be somewhat nuts (perhaps NPD Cluster B? -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissistic_personality_disorder) in ways that would make it difficult to be around her. Fortunately, neither you nor I have to deal with her in person, and can instead (in my case, at least) enjoy her music and appreciate her aggressive efforts to redefine acceptable female behavior from a safe remove."

You want to be taken "seriously" and you use Wikipedia as a source. That explains all we need to know. And if you think "redefining acceptable female behavior" includes being a whore, a drug addict, and a child abuser...well then you are just fucked in ways the DSM-IV hasn't even begun to list.

"What may be must enduringly interesting about Courtney, though, is the paroxysms of rage and contempt that she inspires in people such as yourself. I wish I could say that I can't think of any other pop-culture celebrity who provokes similar responses, but in fact I can think of two off the top of my head: Yoko Ono and Sinead O'Connor. Do you see a pattern here?"

1. I'd hadly call my dashed-off letter an example of "paroxysms of rage and contempt." I'm certain my blood pressure didn't rise; I was playing online checkers and typed it between moves.

2. The pattern I see here: you have a severe case of heroine-worship (pardon the pun) for truly shitty, talentless women; two of whom would still be completely anonymous but for having married someone already famous. Sinead can sing beautifully, but that's all she has going for her. Mentally she's a fucking basket case.

So, thanks for playing. Here's hoping you get out of the house once in awhile at least to see a concert by someone with talent instead of a famous dead husband.
