GENE: CHRISTIANITY IS LIBERAL
BUT NOT ALL LIBERALS ARE CHRISTIAN.
Gene: I'm a Christian and I'm Liberal. I don't believe in abortion, but I support abortion rights - Liberals don't believe in legislating morality. We believe that is up to the person and God.
Furthermore, for all the talk that Conservatives give to the abortion issue, how many of them adopt unwanted children? Adoption, again, is a Liberal trait.
The Environment. The Bible tells us to be good stewards of the earth. That again, is Liberal concern. Conservatives don't seem to give that much thought- do they?
There were Conservatives back when Christ walked the earth. They were whom he referred to as "white gravestones" and hypocrites. They practiced the letter of the law, without applying the spirit.
Conservatives in our society have much more in common with the terrorists than they realize. The terrorists are the extremist Zealots of Muslim faith, much like the Conservatives are the extremist religious faction here. Ironic, huh? No wonder they have the same philosphy. Bomb everyone not like us! God is on our side!
Conservatism in its very nature and and practice, as we've seen recently, is the very antithesis of true Christianity.
Again, as I said before: Liberalism, not as defined as Conservatives, but in the broadest sense of the word, transcends time and era, and means Love and equal rights for everyone under the law.

Ignorance of Veterans & Combat
"Watching from the audience, I wondered if anyone would speak of the disaster unfolding in Iraq (which was never a word of the week).
No one did. The men rose and stated name, rank and theater. Finally, a burly, gray-bearded Vietnam veteran rose and said what no one else dared. After identifying himself, he choked out, "Kids, I just hope to God none of you ever have to experience what we went through."
I found the author's interpretation of this Veteran's comment to be bizarre and an example of her lack of understanding of veterans and the military.
Many war vets, from many wars, utter identical comments. They are speaking of the horrors of conflict. Fear of death. Remembering the deaths of friends. And remembering the death they saw & caused.
A quote from E. B. Sledge member of a marine rifle company during WWII who fought at Peleliu & Okinawa from his excellent book With The Old Breed:
"War is brutish, inglorious, and a terrible waste. Combat leaves an indelible mark on those who are forced to endure it. The only redeeming factors were my comrades' incredible bravery and their devotion to each other." page 315 - last page of the book.
I have heard many vets of many wars from WWI to the current war express identical thoughts. These comments came during times of peace and war.
The certainty that the author has that the vet was speaking of Iraq is an indicator of the author's lack of understanding of those who have served our country. Her horror that her child was enrolled in a school that actually produced members of the military is further evidence of her lack of understanding of our veterans and the sacrifices they have made for our country.

Never argue with someone with their dogma and IQ stuck in the mid to late 60's
Kenai, what are you, like 8 years old? Repeating the same BS over and over. Next time try "Answer my question or I'll hold my breath".
According to your logic(?),the First Amendment doesn't apply to anyone who hasn't volunteered for the war. How "liberal" is that?
BTW, back to the article by Nina. Next time some liberal demands you stop questioning their patriotism, ask them about this article. China jails dissenters, Muslim countries don't allow women to vote, nearly all of Europe has more regulation on abortion and free speech than the US and all you homers can bitch about is a President with 2 and a half years left.
Please go back to protesting China's treatment of Tibet! I agreed with you then and you weren't as hate filled as the Conservatives" you blame for everything from Global Warming (It started immediately after Bush was sworn in, ask Al Gore) to the failure of the Chicago Cubs to win the World Series (ask Michael Moore).
I'd be happy to calmly discuss this article with any sane person on this site. Altho, ONLY if you can limit your name calling tono more than one per paragraph. I'm partial to new ideas, not tired fallacious arguements.

lmike, how do you feel about proofreading?
Because your spelling sucks. Dead easy to spot a freeper. Second grade was the best three years of your life. That teacher didn't follow you, you stayed with her. Ask your momma, she'll tell you the truth. Go on, you live in the basement; it's not that far.

Way to refute my arguement!
Wow, the first incorrect spelling in the history of Salon was mine.
Perhaps the community college YOU went teaches that incorrect spelling refutes any arguement. Not where I went.
Care to respond and calmy debate THIS article or my points or are you searching other posts for another original Class A zinger?
Please forgive any misspellings and I'll forgive yours.

America is already better than Saudi Arabia, so shut up
BTW, back to the article by Nina. Next time some liberal demands you stop questioning their patriotism, ask them about this article. China jails dissenters, Muslim countries don't allow women to vote, nearly all of Europe has more regulation on abortion and free speech than the US and all you homers can bitch about is a President with 2 and a half years left.
The US used to jail dissenters -- communists and anarchists, and they were also deported. And what helped stop that? Not someone like Justice McReynolds, no, it was the ACLU!!! It's the liberals who protect your liberties, not the conservatives. Look at your president, wire-tapping you and the press secretary saying "watch what you say"! It's not the conservatives that protect your freedoms, it's organizations like the ACLU who help minorities of all kinds (religious, ethnic, ideological) keep their rights.
Yes, China is bad, but many muslim countries do allow women to vote, like (recently) Kuwait, and my favorite, Iran. Women also had the right to vote under Hussein in Iraq. I don't know about Egypt, i think women can vote. Indonesia -- vote. Lebanon -- vote. Central Asian Republics -- all vote. Turkey doesn't really count, but yes, women can vote there too. Also Bosnia and Kosovo -- yes, women can vote there too. And someone can fill in the gaps on Syria, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria (i think yes), UAE, Bahrain (i think yes) and Morocco. Yes, women can't vote in Saudi Arabia, but guess what? Women couldn't vote in Switzerland until 1973 either :) My mind is full of useless factoids.
Anyway, the point is, you say, let's all be grateful we live in the US since it's better than all these other countries. Btw, we don't just attack the president, we attack republicans in general, which, unless i didn't get a memo, plan on existing after Bush is no longer president.
But why does that matter? if we were the only country, wouldn't we still try to make it even better?
