I cringed as my young son recited the Pledge of Allegiance. But who was I to question his innocent trust in a nation I long ago lost faith in?

  • Editors choice?

Noting that there were 30 pages of letters posted in response to Ms. Burleigh's piece, I chose to select only the editors choices thinking that these pieces would best present the various facets of response.

This option narrowed the choices to 6 pages (~20%), which seemed reasonable for a "select" group. It seemed after reading 3 or 4 of the chosen letters that only those letters which supported or praised the writer of the article were editors choices.

Upon reading the obsenity laced response entitled "Elite?" ,so proudly penned by Anonymous, I realized that if I wished to get a balanced view of the response, I would have to read without the editors choice filter.

The link I see to the right urges me to "Support independent media" by joining Salon Premium. There is obviously little here that is independent in terms of thinking.

    No thanks!

  • We See The World

I wish people like Nina could see what we see. I truly agree with her about boundless unchallenged patriotism in schools. I also agree that religion should not be taught in schools.

It should be taught at home and in your place of worship. Where we part ways (vastly) is this.

It's ok for a teacher to politicaly indoctinate my child (everyday) with their values if they are left leaning or in some cases right leaning. If Nina does not support religious philosophy, how can she support political philosophy being taught to our children? The answer is...(she is willing to cheat a little) for the good of society. The split between right and left in this country comes from the attempt to institutionalize our philosophy and there by force it on one another. I guess I can say this Nina (I don't know if you read these letters are not) You stop trying to beat down my door with your phylosophy and I'll stop beating yours down with mine. I know this will not happen anytime soon. I also know you think liberalism is just a fact of life.

I think conservatism is just a fact of life. Compulsory educational centers are an unfair battle ground to fight for our philosophy. Being in the media you no doubt will want to keep the battle up and we will keep our battle up. So nothing will change except you will pass on and so will I.

The next generation will feel our sting and move on to better things....(Hopefully)

    Samuel..

  • What about the racism?

"Our son would be one of just 12 little white children in a sunny kindergarten class taught by an enthusiastic woman with eighteen years' experience teaching five-year-olds. "

Who, but an upper west side matron, even mention the color of the children?

  • What about the racism?

Silly Ed. Liberals can't be racist.

  • Joseph Richard ADM AJ Jim Jenn Louis Mike et al

So there's a link to this article on Druggie Limbaugh's website? Wow, it's sad to see there are still people out there willing to be brainwashed by a drug-addled criminal who has his own conservative radio show solely for the purposes of making money by spreading lies to ignorant sheep-like pathetic ditto heads. The fact that they call themselves that when they call his show is telling. Total brainwashing to sheep.

I wonder if the elitist Rush has more than one home? Oh wait, sorry I forgot - you can do what you want with your money if you are a rich neocon hack employed by the right wing propaganda machine that used to be called, simply, "AM radio." And no matter how much doctor shopping/pill popping you do, nobody can ever call you out on your "morals," because morals, in the mind of a conservative, are something to be projected onto others, but never faced when looking in the mirror.

Also, didn't Rush avoid serving his country because of some bogus medical condition, like some minor issue with his rectum that he completely blew out of proportion because he was too much of a coward to serve? Or am I mixing him up with one of the other cowardly conservative radio hosts? Sorry, sometimes I have a hard time keeping straight what guy dodged military service and what guy wanted to rub a garlic-y Middle Eastern fried chick pea ball on a woman's business (and I'm still wondering why that woman didn't go for that - in the shower, no less - silly me!). ANYWAY, it's just funny that these chickenhawk lovers who listen to his show actually write Salon to defend their backward and eternally flawed thinking. Yawn.

One last thing Joseph Richard ADM AJ Jim Jenn Louis Mike et al...are you enlisted in the military? If you want to show your outstanding patriotism so badly, please, show us! Since you claim to love your country, and since you claim to agree with Bush the Butcher's foreign policy, by all means, go enlist and go fight in Iraq or wherever the next invasion will be once "The Decider" decides! You all talk a big story, but you do nothing.

  • Nina's Article And My Response to Writer LeCoster

I've read many of the responses to Nina's article. I also subsequently learned that Nina said during the Clinton presidency, she'd perform oral sex on him so long as he kept abortion legal. Wow, Nina, I bet you're proud of that comment today. Will you be discussing this comment with your son?

Also, to the writer LeCaster, I've got a few points in response to your posting to me.

    1. Of course the US is not beyond reproach. I never wrote that it was. However, in your long, critical list of purported US offenses and crimes, you leave out some important context.

For example, US slavery. Yes, it was wrong. We fought a war over it and 600,000 Americans died. The US was a world leader in ending slavery. Slavery remains today in Africa.

    2. My Lai. Yes, a disgrace and a stain on the US.

    3. Atom bomb. Now this is a good one. It was used to end the war! Although it is hard for the uninformed to understand, by Spring 1945 we had just suffered tens of thousands of KIA taking Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and we expected a million more in taking the Japanese main islands. Should Harry Truman NOT have used it? Should he have, in effect, sent Americans to their deaths needlessly when he had a chance to end it? There was no assurance the nukes would work and that the Japanese leaders would come to their senses. In fact, it took a major US concession to finally end it: the retention of the Emperor.

    4. Red Scare. This is another good one. For one, it was real. Communists were planted within our government and were spying for the USSR. The Rosenbergs were convicted and executed for espionage. KGB archives reveal an extensive effort to penetrate our intel and tech services.

    5. Sudanese chemical plant attacks. I agree with you 100% and Bill Clinton should be brought up on war crimes charges.

    6. Dresden fire bombings. FYI, the Brits did most of this, not the US. But if it makes you feel good to blame US, go ahead. Keep in mind, the Germans started the bombing of civilians as far back as 1939-1940.

Finally: Context. The US is evil compared to whom: Chicoms, NVA, USSR, Khomeni, OBL, Castro? We have rule of law and representative democracy. Wow, count your blessing!! Keith Cook
