I cringed as my young son recited the Pledge of Allegiance. But who was I to question his innocent trust in a nation I long ago lost faith in?

I guess what you're saying is that due to the lack of educational/job opportunities, some poorer people in this town, and towns like this one, turn to enlisting in the military. Well, if they/their families wouldn't have voted for money-hungry pro big-business/bottom line conservatives, there would be more job opportunities here, instead of jobs going to Mexico and India and China.

I don't feel a bit sorry for anyone who voted against their own best interests and the best interests of their families, in order to install this King in the White House, because they were apparently so scared that two gays might someday have the right to marry, or that some woman they don't even know may or may not get an abortion, or that someone may take away their precious right to own guns. When they start voting for the party that truly cares about helping people, instead of the party of Big Pharma, Big Credit, and Big Tobacco, then they might get somewhere. Until then, I have no sympathy when times are rough. As the saying goes, they made their beds...

  • indoctrination

Why is left-wing liberal ideological indoctrination of children better than right-wing conservative ideological indoctrination of children?

Personally, I find both of them pretty offensive. I came from a conservative family (Bible thumping farmers on one side and country-club Republicans on the other), but I was fortunate enough to have parents who taught me critical thinking and openmindedness, and thus allowed me to decide for myself which political views I found more compelling. That is, when I was old enough to understand them. I'm also grateful that they let me be a normal five year old who is more interested in playing with tadpoles and baking cookies than ethnic cleansing and the intricacies of foreign policy.

  • Well one thing's for sure

Mention France, and watch everyone go nuts.

  • Irony alert!

TO ALL OF YOU HOSTILE LETTER WRITERS: QUIT LETTING THE RIGHTIES/FUNDIES/WINGNUTS FRAME THE ISSUE WITH THEIR HATE SPEECH.

    [...]

The war in Iraq is a lie. Bush is a murderer. ...whitewashing of this disgusting global butchery for pure war profiteering perpetrated by King Bush and his lying murderous cabinet. Rummy, Condi, General Pace, Cheney, etc. ...

Ha ha ha! Silly liberal! Irony alert! Irony alert!

  • Gene

    Thanks, you're clever!

  • I Actually Feel Sorry for Liberals

Liberals are an unhappy lot. They have nothing to believe in, therefore they live in misery. There is nothing inspiring about liberalism. It's all about hopelessness and despair. There is no love of country and no transcendant belief system. Perhaps they should all join the Human Extinction Movement.

  • This article was weird

I guess basically it was the overreactions and the elitist tone. You can be smart and have money and not act like you are better than everyone else. Then she doesn't even really take her own beliefs and stand up for them, but still acts like she's better than all these small town folks.

It's just seems like her whole article was about how she loves her views, but hides them in public. Well thanks.

Plus I think that all of us are just sick and tired of reading about RICH WHITE LIBERAL MOMS and DADS! Are there no poor white moms? Are there no single moms having trouble finding daycare or getting child support or trying to rail against whatever propoganda they are up against? How about some articles from liberal people of color? Or does Salon think they don't really exist.

Hey I'm average income in one of the highest cost of living cities in the US and I would like to have a child, but the cost of daycare and rent is prohibitive. I would literally put myself below poverty if I had a kid. Why aren't there articles like that, instead it's always articles about people who have all the material things they could ever need so now they have time to ponder the state of whether or not to have kids or feed their dogs raw meat. Wow I would love for my biggest problem being where to live or how to get my kid in a good school. Well it's nice and easy when you can afford the Upper West Side and offers no help to those people who cannot afford private schools.

People tend to want to read things that at least once in a while they can relate to or use for helpful info on navigating their own lives. Shit Salon, you're in Frisco, can you at least find some Asian writers or how about some people from Hunter's Point and their reactions to trying to raise a family?

Anything other than these very similar articles from privledged white folk.

  • Because women write about women's problems and Asians write about Asian problems

Have you ever heard of existentialism? :) Plus, there's love of humanity and individual people. There's something to live for.

She's better than everyone else because she lived in France? Yup, mention France and everyone thinks you're a snob.

Well, they probably don't have a lot of free time to write articles.

How about some articles from liberal people of color? Or does Salon think they don't really exist.

Good point. But how do we know some of the writers aren't of color? Perhaps they are. Do "people of color" have to always write about "people of color issues"?

Because it would be too depressing and quotidian. People don't want to read about real hardships. We like reading about faux problems because they don't make us sad.

People tend to want to read things that at least once in a while they can relate to or use for helpful info on navigating their own lives.

Aren't there websites about stuff like this out there? I mean, do you want salon to become a practical guide on the best schools in Oakland? I don't.

Shit Salon, you're in Frisco, can you at least find some Asian writers or how about some people from Hunter's Point and their reactions to trying to raise a family?

Because presumably Asian writers would only write about Asian issues. What if the Asian writers just kept writing about rich mommy problems?
