It takes very little to work on the other side of journalism - marketing/communications which is diverse field and requires many of the same skills - writing, editing, creative story-making ideas, photography, interviewing and research. And it doesn't have to be all big corporate and icky either - almost everyone has a communications team these days. Arts organizations, non-profits, overseas aid groups - you name it. You may think it beneath you, or that it means having to lie for a living, but if you find the right fit it is as rewarding as any other type of job. On the side you can keep freelancing if you wish, I recently discovered that instead of freelance magazine writing I would rather write fiction - and so I am - while making $75,000 per year as a communications advisor. (I didn't start out there 10 years ago, but I've found this a pretty easy career in which to advance for a somewhat intelligent person).
I know journalism seems a lot sexier than being a pr flack - but realistically we all have to make a living and you already have the skills to work in communications without a lot of re-schooling.
