Perhaps if you can hook MJ up with the rights to the Rolling Stones' catalogue, he'll hook you up.
I've read a lot of upsetting, sad and even heartbreaking letters to Cary but this one ... this one surpasses all of them. I don't believe that there's anything that can be done to alleviate this LW's disturbing compulsion to spend good money, never mind risking the sardine-packed germ-laden hell that is your average commercial flight, to travel a great distance to see Michael Jackson. My heart bleeds for you LW but you may be beyond help.
This sounds like the plot of some artsy independent comedy film from South Korea or something.
You'll have a much, much better chance finding ways to save money FOR and save money ON flights to London than you ever will getting in touch with MJ, much less convincing him to tour in the U.S. I suggest you direct your attention thusly. Good luck!
The LW loves Michael Jackson. So? I'm willing to bet good money that anyone reading this has liked a MJ song at one point or another (yes, his Jackson 5 work counts).
Lw, I agree with Cary. Where there's money, there's a pop star. I think MJ will come back to the states eventually.
Dear Letter Writer,
You're going to be slammed and slammed again in these comments for saying anything good about Michael Jackson. It will be a huge dissing party with you as the guest of honor.
Don't let it deter you. Someday he will perform in the U.S. and you will be there. Maybe someday you'll be able to see him overseas.
There is no reason to let your dream die. But there is no way for you to make this any more likely than fate allows. Michael Jackson is too big a star. You can't get to him. And you can't make other people change their minds about him.
Just maintain your love. There's nothing wrong with that. Your love for him doesn't change him, but it means something to you.
While LW's taste is so far into the gutter he's gotta have sewage breath, FFS, if he like MJ so much beg, borrow or steal and get yourself to the UK. Sell a frigging kidney and get that ticket. If this is what you want to linger on while you dream in your deathbed decades from now, go for it. You won't be fondly remembering every penny and dime you saved.
Mind you, MJ will prolly just be a no show anyway. He's a flake, not to mention a child molester.
This letter is as sad as a war widow who still waits for her husband to come back, long after the war ended. Michael Jackson is always promising to tour again or perform somewhere, but ultimately the promised concert never happens. I don't blame the LW for wanting to see Michael live, he's an electrifying performer. But I think it's quite unclear whether or not this concert will actually happen. He has a history of not honoring contracts and he will probably get cold feet and find a way to wriggle out of this. His days of performing are long over. Many of his fans have quietly accepted this.
"Also, my sister and I both believe that Michael is one of the most generous men on the face of the earth. He has given back so much to children and charities. He is known for his generosity, but for some reason he gets slammed for rumors and innuendos. He was accused, but never prosecuted for, illicit activity. We believe that a person of his wealth and influence is an easy target for opportunists."
We can agree to disagree about whether or not Michael Jackson molests children -- to me it's pretty obvious he does very regularly. But one thing is clear about Michael Jackson's generosity: it's a myth. Jackson often starts charitable foundations in his own name and the money raised goes largely towards advertising campaigns that promote Jackson's own generosity. The man has yet to actually give a lot of money to anyone needy...or at least anyone who hasn't then accused him of molesting them. Jackson lavishes gifts on people he admires but he is not a benefactor of anything significant.
And that's not to say you can't still idolize him and his talent. His songs were very important to me in my youth too and I understand why he arouses so much joy and loyalty. But, sooner or later the LW has to examine what it is about her life or her history that would make her so blind to someone so monstrous and selfish.
My sister and I used to dream of seeing our favorite sports team play live, and this year we bought tickets and went to a game. Our team won and it was an awesome, glorious moment for us.
So even though I am not a big Michael Jackson fan, I understand. This is not just about Michael -- it's about your childhood, your family, your relationship with your sister, and your desire to share a meaningful experience where you are both happy and excited and together.
It sounds lie talking about Michael is a way for you and your sister to bond. You might have different lives, and live in different places, but you can gush about Michael and feel connected in your shared memories.
I think you and your sister should get together and brainstorm crazy ways to lure Michael Jackson to the states. It could be a crazy internet campaign, or it could involve the radio, or entering some sort of contest. Your plan will almost certainly fail, but that's not what matters.
What matters is that you have your sister. You "love" Michael (as an artist you've never met) but you love your sister as family. And one day, when you both have money, you and your sister can take an awesome trip together. It might not be to London, and it might not involve Michael Jackson... but it will involve both of you, and it will be an awesome time.
