What works to focus me - a cup of coffee

... or other caffeinated drink. Though I have never been diagnosed with ADD, I suspect I have it as well, and I am just like you described. I am also a software programmer. Others have made good suggestions about lists and conscious efforts toward organization. and now I'm sure everyone's chemistry is different, but I found the best way for me to get focused and motivated, at work specifically, is to drink coffee. If you don't already drink it, try it right before you need to maintain focus for a while, but not too much or you'll get jittery. It has an amazing effect of focusing my mind on the more mundane stuff, like bug testing. I also try to change my perspective and look at things like bug testing as a challenge - how good can i be at rooting out that imperfect code. And after work is done, I can come home, and let my mind wander as I do the dinner dishes.
