Boo Radley??
Maybe this poor old woman wants to be left alone! We know nothing about her, save her non-whiteness, her advanced age, her couch, her house, and her son. She could be sweet or bitchy, incapacitated or indifferent, we really don't know. LW is making a lot of assumptions ("I'm sure the elderly lady is mortified") and is wrapped up in a condescending fantasy about this woman. If she's as hard to catch up with as LW says, she probably wants to be left alone, and doesn't give a rat's ass about the plants.
