Oleander
Goodness, will everyone please calm down about how poisonous the oleander is? No, you shouldn't eat it, or burn it. But it's not going to kill you if you bring a pretty bloom into your house!
I live on the coast, and these unkillable, green, and blossoming plants grow everywhere, and we love them. I have kids, and dogs, and I've even lopped off branches of my oleaders. My kids don't eat the landscaping. True, we should all be aware that it is a very poisonous plant if ingested, but please take a moment to calm down before you post.
PS Why did Cary assume the lady was from the South? Maybe he's referring to a postmark we didn't see, but really. Do "non-white" people only live in the south? Maybe the old lady is Latino. Maybe this whole story takes place in the Southwest. Just wondering.
