Of Ph.D.s, gay lovers, slave narratives and the Ivy League

I have a choice of two schools for my doctorate; one is ranked 63 and the other is ranked 90. Which should I choose -- and what about my boyfriend?

Was this a 91 year old letter?

Mr Tennis, this is NOT 1917! What a misplaced vision of Ivy League GRADUATE education!

Two points. First, while it is certainly true that many of the Ivy League undergrads are Blue Bloods, this is not the case for graduate students--and most certainly not those in the Humanities. Don't get me wrong, as a PhD from a state school, I hate the Ivies. Not, however, because of their demographics. Second, I hate the Ivies because so many people, apparently including Mr Tennis, have the wrong idea of what they represent. They do not provide the best higher education, merely the most prominent names in higher education. A degree from Princeton just carries more weight than one from Penn State. This is, unfortunately, even true among academics who recognize that the academics in the Ivies teach and research the same way that everyone else does.

So, if the Ivies is where he wants to be, then go for it.
