Of course trolls are professional white males. They are invariably middle or upper-middle class white males with no particular difficulties in real life. Who else would have the time, the contempt for views other than their own, or the repressed rage that comprises the psychology of a troll?

And Cary, your response was kinda lame this time. Trolls hurt people on purpose, for their own amusement. Hurting people on purpose is not good--no matter what their politics are.

Not that the letter writer never at any time said "he" was white, or even a male. But you can go on with your typical bullshit (hey, fuck you!) assumptions that I see a lot of here at Salon. Does this opinion and the fact that I feel compelled to share it make me a "troll"?
I just so happen to think you're full of shit. And btw, I am also a regular troll on right wing blogs, and if you think they don't care about us, you're wrong. Problem is, most of them have already had too much Kool Aid (Flavoraid, really I guess) for it to matter.
So it's not about "hurting people's feelings" at all. We know we can't really accomplish this. It's about throwing the truth out there whenever we come across the garbage heap that is most of the right wing blogosphere. Check it out sometime.

While I'd likely agree with the LW's politics, I find trolling asinine and infantile. I'm an atheist and have been a regular in an atheist chat room for several years now which is routinely bombarded by fundamentalist/conservative trolls spewing drivel just for the sake of being unpleasant. Personally, while I can understand the urge to keep up with what "the other side" is doing, I've no desire to invade their chat rooms and toss insults back at them, though I have given in to the temptation to trade vicious barbs with them when the invade my space. Since that did cost me an online account once, I have learned to restrain myself, like the responsible adult I usually am.

How do people even have time for this crap? It's pathetic, no matter whose politics you believe in. And pretty cowardly to boot. Would you have the fortitude to spew your venom into someone else's face? Doubtful. But, if you have nothing else better to do with your time, and you wish to contribute to the slow death of civility and rational discussion, by all means keep it up. And by the way, most of the rest of us who may share your point of view, wish you would just STFU and stop making the rest of us look like idiots.

Bicycles = recreation. Find something else that is fun to do! Video games? Message boards (I am addicted to ask.metafilter.com!
Boxing gloves = control. Do you generally feel helpless to the banter of the RWing? To the hatred they spew? To hatred in general? I know i do. It makes me sad. Regain your control, whatever that is. What in life will make you feel more in control of your life? Getting in shape? Actual boxing lessons? The more control you feel, the less perhaps, you will need to worry about and respond to any of the comments you read on the Internet.

These hate mongers have enough bastions all to themselves on the radio and Fox News, let's not let them have anymore! To all those who say it's immature and childish, GROW UP! The very definition of freedom is at stake. The right wing will not rest until every child is force fed the bible and everyone who questions it is hauled away to the gulag. Think I'm being paranoid? Turn on Rush sometime and see for yourselves. We are at war, and not just in Iraq and Afganistan. I fight with right wingers on my local newspaper website all the time. The only reason I don't do it on the actual right wing sites is because if I did, that's all I would do all day. That, and the time needed to look up all the facts to counter their lies would be too time consuming (since there's so many of them).
We need to stand and fight, because if this election gets stolen like the last two were, it's highly unlikely that the democrats will do it for us! Keep it Green! Your doing a heckuva job!
