Warning: this is a well-known scam!
Warning! You are in the process of being scammed. I'm a little shocked no one else realizes what is occurring. PLEASE, realize, you've gotten really really bad advice from your "lawyer friend" and need to be very careful the next steps you take.
- corporate offices do not offer people $14,000.00 based on a phone call
- this company has a signed, legally binding contract in hand
- verbal assurances given over the phone do not stand up in court
- they will do the work, then sue you for the cost, and be legally in the right to collect it. worse, by having you think it is "free" while it is being done, you will not properly supervise it, and there will be serious quality problems
PLEASE consult a lawyer immediately as to how you can get out of this contract. in the worst case, the contract you signed may have a clause charging you a "consulting fee" for your two-hour sales session. in which case, you're already going to lose money on this, either in the lawyer costs (theirs is salaried, on staff), or by paying those fees to wash your hands of these crooks.
other readers, please back me up on this! IANAL, just someone who has hung out with a lot of low-lifes.

corporate offices do not offer people $14,000.00 based on a phone call
PLEASE read ren-n0-stimpy's post s/he is 100% accurate in describing the situation and WHAT YOU NEED TO DO to protect yourself!!!
-
she's not asking for anything
uh, YES she is. Read her last paragraph: she says "should I go for the $14,000 rehab OR HOLD OUT FOR MORE, MAYBE ALL NEW APPLICANCES?"
that's asking for a heck of a lot more than some free software or a couple hundred dollar refund.
-
You can get out of buying a car! *NOT*!
well a lot of those consumer rights laws vary state by state. IN VIRGINIA, there is a 3 day period to cancel a contract, even for a car.
I guess that's why you're a paralegal and not a lawyer who can offer ACCURATE legal advice.
-
I also wanted to know if Cary thought I was being foolish to not accept more.
what you missed in all these posts is that everyone thinks you're foolish for wanting more. (and greeedy)
You're foolish to think you deserve anything more than a verbal apology and a free toaster. You're foolish for believing anything the saleman or the company told you. NO corporation offers $14,000 to someone who calls them on the phone. Most people have posted this and you're totally missed the message. go ahead, get the "free" work and let us know how it works. You don't want advice, you want permission to do something you know is unethical. have at it lady, but don't say we didn't warn you when the workers strip your house of everything and disappear while you're at work.
-
here's your answer, even thought you don't want to hear what's right
well, fwiw, I think the "karma" of accepting $14,000 for being discomforted for a couple of hours ...
in a situation you now claim was not scary and that you could have handled differently is pretty dubious ...
Accept the apology, ask the company to donate the money to Habitat for Humanity and get on with your life ...
yes, your question was why NOT ask for more .... because it's greedy, ugly, exploitative, violates good faitn and most folks sense of "justice"...
have a nice life

Wow, I'm Stunned at How Stupid Some of You Are.
takes one to know one. AND RUDE
I still don't believe your "story"
-
He was not dangerous.
then WHAT on earth are you being compensated for?
You are being dishonest and takeing money under false pretenses is stealing.
-
I later met with a VP.
so you happen to live in the same city as the "national Chain" corporate headquarters.
wow, what are the odds?!
more proof this whole story is made up for attention.
-
Yes, the actual president called me. Go figure. No, I'm not lying, you judging shits.
lady, re-up your medication and stop writng insulting lies.
you've never had a job in a corporation, so you just don't know how ridiculous your posts look. You dont' know how corporation work.
-
Turns out I didn't need to sign anything with the big home store except agree to a free remodel with a vice president on-site, overseeing the entire job.
oh THAT IS hilarious! NOW I KNOW it's all a sad fantasy in your mind.
the corporate VPs of places like Home Depot or Lowes have finance backgrounds, NOT construction!!! LOLOLOLOL! They would NEVER send a vice presidnt on-site!!!!! to oversee the job. These guys have MBAs from Northwestern, not construction expereince.
thanks, I needed a good laugh
-
Does anyone here think that it sounds reasonable that the president of Home Depot, Sears, or Lowe's would spend time sorting out bad service calls?
of course not; it's all a bizarre attention-seeking game of LW
-
large national corporations don't like it a bit when two-bit local contractors make them look bad,
true, and they'll end the subcontracting relationship for that. But they are NOT liable for their actions, that subcontracting company is, that's part of why those companies use subcontractors.

Terrorized? Oh Yeah, There Was That Too.
Funny how after the golly gee gosh awful accounting of the visit her biggest concern is how to get more freebies. This woman's kids should be placed with someone else because she obviously lacks mature judgment skills. Kids as young as 3 years old learn to not let strangers in the house! She could've easily went to the company's store and let an employee lay-out her new kitchen on the computers.
Who in their right mind would sit for 2 hours with someone like this whether they had kids or not? Even if one wasn't afraid, which one should've been, who would want to do business with a jerk like this or the company that hired him?
I wouldn't want my kids playing over at her house!
-
LW, if these three letters are yours, WHY
didn't you call the police?
If not on the spot, then later?
It isn't your responsiblity to decide if he is dangerous, it's your responsiblity to report illegal/threatening behavior.
And if you have had an abusive husband (and it wouldn't surprise me if you have had an abusive parent as well), can you say Cary was really not correct in saying you have some judgement problems?
I'm not being judgemental; as a graduate of several abusive relationships, I had to learn that I was exercising poor judgement.
If you can be bullied in your own house for two hours, are you really doing just fine?
I sense a lot of denial on your part and not a little anger. Please read the comments on this thread with an open mind. We are glad you wrote, but c'mon, why won't you name the company? Can you explain why the police are not involved (your kids should not be scared of the police, by the way, and not afraid to see them pull up)? A police call would even go a long ways towards establishing your legal case, if you chose to build one.
There's a lot of good people saying pretty useful things here--you don't have to get a gun if you don't want to, but why cuss the posters out and call them names?
