I think these dark thoughts are a byproduct of evolution. Parents have the 'what's-the-danger-right-now' machine going on in the backs of their brains so they would be prepared if the terrible thing did happen, right there, on the spot.
Isn't that what post-partum depression really is too? the what-if-something-bad machine gone on overdrive?
If you didn't have the dark thoughts you wouldn't be prepared, you wouldn't be able to protect your children properly. So, recognize the thoughts as the warnings they are, and then hug your kid again.
