I'm a jazz pianist, nearly 50, and I need to make some real money!

I can't believe how little one makes practicing "America's only original art form."

    Try and Save Too

There's been some excellent and wonderful advice here, and I too find your story inspiring and amazing. Frankly anyone who can make a living for years as either an entertainer or an athlete has my total admiration.

My free advice (worth every penny).

    1) Don't bother even trying for a career in 'law' or 'finance' Tom is right here, and Cary is (unusually) completely wrong, so wrong in fact I wonder what he was smoking when he typed that little piece of advice!

There are no 50 year old beginners in any profession who will even partially make it - such career changes are for the eccentric rich who can put themselves through college again only. As for interns - forget it - no office wants a 50 year old intern. None!

    2) Starting tomorrow, you're going to have to start saving for the long term. A 90-day access account might be a good place to start. That's where you need to give 90 days notice to the bank before you can withdraw your money. Start very small. Just start incrementally saving. If any financial crisis crisis blows up, you'll have fixed it in 90 days in any case. Once you've a bit of a nest egg (I suggest $500) you can at 90 days notice invest that in something that gives you a worthwhile return like stocks. It isn't going to be easy but it's a start.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful inspiring life with us, and I do hope that you'll pick up something from the really good advice here.
