She's bare, and she "looks eight"

SyFy's new "Caprica" campaign is scary for all the wrong reasons

um

Perhaps it's because I'm familiar with the show's subject matter, as a recovering BSG addict. But personally the ads didn't bother me at all. Actually, I thought the fetal position one was quite cool. The only one that I didn't like was the bitten apple one, only because it didn't really seem to tie in at all with what the show is about.

you know what's pretty much the definition of intellectual irresponsibility?

Saying that the entertainment industry, without qualification, has been defending rape. Come on. I cannot understand Broadsheet's inability to a) condemn a horrific and b) not act like a bunch of shrieking tweens at the same time. This has been a really low moment for this blog, in terms of honesty, restraint and intelligent commentary, during this whole imbroglio.

She's 22

And as the writer admitted, has posed provocatively in the past (not to mention the obvious example that comprises this articles premise). So it's bad that she, in the opinion of some anonymous internet personalities, _looks_ young? I don't understand. Are we supposed to judge the morality of such images on the actual age of the person involved, or the apparent age. Or is outrage mandated based on whichever one is lower?

She doesn't look 8 years old

She looks like a doe-eyed, heart-shaped face, 20-something. Which are exactly who Hollywood casts to play "teenagers" in shows like "Gossip Girl" and "Veronica Mars", and now, "Caprica".

Broadsheet has been really burning the midnight oil lately as the possibly kiddie porn alert system, and there's no doubt in a few cases they've had a point. But posts like this are a cry wolf situation that does nothing but further Broadsheet's burgeoning reputation as a borderline tabloid-blog. Think Perez Hilton without the nip slips.

It also smells a bit like filler: an easy 300-word post.

She does not "look eight"

This type of article is the type of thing that makes me insane. Have we all really forgotten what 16 year old really look like? (granted the actress is actually older but she genuinely looks 16-18). The advertising should be read as she in the one where she has a bite out of the apple - Garden of Eden metaphor. Naked - innocence. Late teenager very young adult -- haste, leaping into disiscions without thinking.

The Naked silohette one if you did not know who the charter is there is no way of knowing her age.

Once again this is a sensational article that points crys wolf on things that aren't there. It is articles like this that make me embarassed to be a feminist.

An interesting reaction...

I think that the author's reaction to this ad campaign tells us much more about what is going on in her own mind than it does about the motivations of the SciFi Channel.

She may wish to seek professional treatment before she acts out on those impulses.

I find it humerous

I almost actually laughed out loud when I saw this article was following one entitled "Feminists have no sense of humor". If I were to build a definition of feminism based on what I read in Broadsheet feminism would be marked by an overly sensitive and heightened sense of indignation. It's a freakin' ad. Lighten up Francis.

what 8-year-olds look like that??

She looks like a young woman to me. Not a girl, a woman. And she's showing a friggin' shoulder. Oh no, call the morality police!

(This is my way of saying I cannot fathom the outrage, not one bit. And I'm usually on the side of "dude, not cool." Not this time.)

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 09:39 AM

overreact much?

Anyone who says she looks 8 has never seen an 8 year old. She looks 20 to me. I went to the link to see the picture and at first I was sure that I must be missing it because the totally non-offensive photo there could not be the one that caused such overblown outrage on Salon right? Oh, it was that photo? Wow.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 09:39 AM

So she's 22 and pretends to look 16

In fact she looks 18-22. 16 does not look like that. And where 16 who looks like that, it looks 18-22.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 09:45 AM

Yeah, 'cause BSG's producers encouraged rape

Anyone else remember the episode where a Pegasus officer was about to torture/rape Sharon/Athena and Tyrol and Helo burst in and KILLED HIM?

I found the imagery of Cavil & Co. experimenting on four-year-old Hera in the final eps far more disturbing than these promos--which, BTW, are put out by the *network*, not the *producers*.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 09:49 AM

Really?

To me, she looks her age, and it's irresponsible writing to accuse the show's producers of "pandering to the perv demographic" and representing the part of community that is defending Roman Polanski with a "Want some candy, little girl?" attitude. Citing a few online commenters with aliases like "Pinkhamster" is hardly responsible journalism. Neither is mentioning the five other posters and pretending they all have (arguably) questionable material, when three of them feature fully clothed adult characters.

And for the record, how is a woman holding a dandelion or a female silhouette encouraging perversion?

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 09:51 AM

Eight!?

What the hell are you talking about? That woman doesn't look remotely like an eight year old. The photo is simply photoshopped to make her face softer; it's not remotely creepy or gross though

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 09:51 AM

The actress in question is 22 years old.

That's a legal adult. Hollywood uses young-looking actors and actresses in their 20s to play 16-year-olds all the time because they can legally work longer hours.

I think that the whole "naked girl with an apple with a bite out of it" has to do with the story of Eve, which is probably going to work thematically into the show. Not like THAT'S never been done before, but whatever.

As for "rebellious teenager in a uniform" on a sci-fi show and what kind of an audience will that attract...Seaquest DSV did that in the early 1990s by casting Jonathan Brandis in exactly that character role. I don't think it set off a firestorm of pedophilia so much as teenage girls plastering their bedroom walls with his posters.

More monsters to battle

The advertisement in question is not prurient in the least. It evokes Eve biting the forbidden fruit. As I recall, Eve was naked prior to eating the fruit and became ashamed of her nudity aftewards.

I don't understand how nudity and sexuality and then "perversion" became so comingled together as to become nearly inseparable. We are a very confused society when it comes to nudity. Let's not even talk about sexuality.

I think there are quite a few pages waiting to be written on how our conceptions of what is "perverse" in society is itself a function of our social organization. We abhor sex because then we can't spend all our days and nights thinking about making money, thinking about shopping.

We would all be better off focusing our attention on why our attitudes about nudity and sex are so warped to begin with, instead of looking for ghouls and demons to fight and slay for cheap thrills.

"Be careful when you fight the monsters, lest you become one; and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you" -- Nietzsche
