Sarah Palin, one tough mama

She may not be humble or politically savvy. But the governor is a rare political species: A strong maternal woman

The letters thread is now closed.

"She showed us the appeal of the strong, confident, maternal woman."?????????

I thought LSD had gone out of style.

What absolute imbecile could possibly even think in this psychobabbling way?

This failin palin is most correctly defined as the followin:

C-an't

U-nderstand

N-ormal

T-hinking.

This slime needs to slither back under the permafrost and take this loony writer with her/it.

Mama Grizzly

First, Palin appeals to men because she is "hot"--a nice body, fertile, and incredibly stupid, which is (sad to say) an important criterion for many men when determining if women are "acceptable" or not.

Second, to refer to oneself as a "mama grizzly" as a good thing is pretty tough to stuff down my craw when I see her sitting in a room filled with dead animals that she killed and had stuffed to show off her macho skills. There was a stuffed bear very near her face in one interview, as I recall, and it's pretty amazing that she uses the grizzly image as a positive for herself when she thinks of them as something to kill and put on the back of a couch.

When I heard about the "5 colleges in 6 years" (or was it the reverse?), I knew this was one of those "students" who buy all their term papers, disappear into the woodwork and get a degree not for the inherent value of learning, but for the ticket it provides to jobs later on. I laughed out loud last night when I heard about "the Department of Law" last night on Rachel Maddow as it is yet more evidence of this woman's basic lack of knowledge and awesome willingness to shoot off her mouth in spite of it. The fact that a substantial number of people love her and want her to be their President is just proof that democracy is more scary than we ever imagined.

Sarah Loves the Spotlight, But Only When It Loves Her

I really think this latest nauseating news from Alaska is designed to steal the spotlight from Obama. And I think Miss Sarah is completely and totally narcissistic, probably to the point of clinical illness. If she was truly tough, she wouldn't have resigned. As long as things are going Sarah's way, and she's surrounded by her adoring fans, she's milking it for all it's worth. But if anyone makes a disparaging remark about her (and there's plenty to disparage), she flies into a rage and thinks her First Amendment rights have been violated. Of course, it was perfectly all right for her to stir up hatred and racism during the campaign. As for your assertion that she is "a rare political species", there are plenty of women in the political arena that deserve admiration for their strength and maternal instincts; Miss Sarah just doesn't happen to be one of them.

palin baby

It was fiting to hear the ducks quacking in the background of the queens speech. She has been quacking since last aug. and really hasn't said much of anything except keep my family out of it. Maybe she should quit parading her family in front of the camera all the time. Good riddens. Alaska will be better off without her. She can always get a job at fox noise. She would fit right in with all the rest of their junkies they have working there

Readerreader

Hm, I think this all just proves that JohnAnderson was onto something. Resigning from governer was a good first step. Now, she must take it farther. She must resign from more duties, she must boldly retreat to where no public figure has retreated before. (Yes, I have read this whole thread.)

This could - and should - end with her taking a vow of silence and living in an igloo on a remote snowswept Alaskan plain.

You are a visionary, Readerreader. I dare you to imagine how her popularity would skyrocket at this point. Princess Diana would be nothing compared to her. Imagine the pilgrims (and the occasional Fox News Team), camping out in all weather, waiting to catch a glimpse of her parka-enshrouded figure as she shuffles out in the gray light to silently greet the throngs, which she should do at least once a day.(But briefly, briefly.)

She would not need to talk to organize and motivate her followers, or probably even campaign for president. Her followers will understand her without the use of language - probably better than ever. The rest of us, as she has already recognized, will never understand her, so there will be little lost there, either.

Yes, I think that would be the cleverest move of all...but I cannot rule out that wishful thinking might be getting the better of me here.

You're like the police in the Pirates of Penzance, aren't you?

Even they made good on their promise to leave eventually.

Jon and Sarah plus 8!

I'm sorry, but no.

For one, I suspect that the main reason Palin is considered so "motherly" is simply because she has a lot of damn kids. Amanda, I think you're confusing "maternal" for "fertile."

In addition, let's all remember that around the same time Snowbilly was announced as a VP canidate, the "scandal" surronding her pregnant teen daughter also surfaced. Let's also keep in mind that at this time she was an "unknown", which is what made her selection look questionable in the first place. Therefore the first thing Palin was "known for" was her family drama instead of her political accomplishments (probably because she was none.) This helped contribute to her "maternal" image (and note that, unlike what Amanda implies, it's not exactly a positive image.)

@Readerreader

A couple of months after Palin gets her radio or tv gig...check her poll numbers then.

She'll be popular with the same people who love her now...everyone else will be repulsed.

Oh, and about the resignation speech

Just watched it on Youtube. I feel guilty about my prior cynicism.

I thought it was very nice. She laid out in simple format that she wants to step aside and let her deputy take over to avoid frivolous legal expenses, put her energy to use campaigning for ANWR outside Alaska, and not have the state subsidize that effort, to the extent it requires divided time and attention.

What is everyone freaking out about? I didn't even think it seemed rushed, ill-conceived, or any other negatives. I read all these stories saying she is in pain, exhausted, hounded by probable scandals. I didn't detect any of that. (Though in fairness, I now have the benefit of knowing that the scandal rumors were disproven).

This is the way she speaks. It's simple, direct, effective. I always enjoy hearing her speak, and don't know why I was willing to believe the critics (including the Republican critics) who threw up all over it, as usual.

As for my prior assessment of this as a half-Nixon, I must adjust that too. It was, at most, a 1/16 Nixon. Much less schmaltz than I imagined. (Schmaltz is an indispensible ingredient in the American political cupboard).

It wasn't even very machiavellian. Although, I do believe she could pay off the legal tab to a much easier extent than she lets on. Even that, though, is debatable, because I'm not sure it is fair to impress that bill upon her supporters; i.e., what the Obamatons are doing is not fair to anyone.

What I see here is even more beautiful than what I imagined. Not only does her speech ring true; it is fair and just. She should be free to do her thing nationally, given that "plumbers" have abused the law to prevent her from doing it locally. It just so happens that those plumbers have given her a gift, inadvertently, because she needs that freedom to dual track her exploration of a presidential campaign.

Finally, what I heard was the outline of a presidential platform. The country needs more oil drilling; i.e., ANWR, to be independent and improve prosperity through lower energy costs. And it needs more people like Trig; i.e., fewer abortions. It needs less spending by politicians who have the guts to take risks; who is gutsier than Sarah? Who in the Republican party can sell energy, prosperity, fiscal prudence, and life values better than Sarah Palin? Those are the issues, after all. She is the best one to do it.

I've never been more supportive than I was after watching that speech. (In part, because her manuever is so bold and clever).
