This is not a trick post; you are beautiful

A new viral campaign has a simple but powerful message for women: Your body is just fine

The letters thread is now closed.

I tell women they are beautiful all the time

whether or not it's true.

I wouldn't get laid otherwise.

I like it

It reminds me of the people that went around placing little toy soldiers everywhere as a war protest.

Randomness vs. Kindness

The anonymity and randomness of this project -- the very things that might make the messages seem meaningless at first -- are what give it power.

Was this post really written by the same woman who was so deeply critical of men handing out random flowers?

I do the same thing to myself

I tell myself I am handsome, rich, and have a big pecker. Unfortunately, it's not true.

From Operation Beautiful

First of all, I read Salon every day so imagine my suprise when I saw MY BLOG on the homepage - I nearly died.

Thank you for spreading the word about OB! It's an amazing movement and the most incredible thing is how YOU feel after posting a note. By helping others, you're helping yourself!

:) Thank you!

I'm going to start a campaign for men

Putting stickers over urinals that say "Your dick is just fine"

My body is NOT just fine

Every time I gain five pounds, somehow the extra fat manages to trigger my autoimmune disease.

Probably because fat is pro-inflammatory and increases estrogen. So it's not just fine on many levels.

I can understand how some people need to be told that it IS just fine, but for many people it's not fine at all to carry extra weight.

I just found out at the vet that my dog has back problems now because I let her gain too much weight.

So it's not just fine for her either.

That was a brave man who wrote that on the mirror.

Well, maybe it was a cross dresser. A really HOT cross dresser.

But the good money is on keeping women thinking that they are fat, ugly and smell bad because that is where corporate American rakes in the big bucks.

As much as men may love you, that does no good if you do not love yourself.

We men are helpless in the face of that and it is frustrating and a turn off.

Most of us can't help thinking you are beautiful because we are designed that way.

YOUR DESIGN HAS BEEN PERVERTED BY INDUSTRY AND ADVERTISING.

Everyone is Beautiful

Unfortunately, some of us are much more beautiful than others. Damnit, I hate reality.

The original

This seems stolen from the far more aesthetically pleasing, more understated, and I think more effective because of it's open-endness "You Are Beautiful" public art campaign that's been going on for the past 5 years and was begun on Kate's home turf of Chicago.

My dear Chris Wood,

"I'm going to start a campaign for men

MADNESS! You will ruin the economy.

Who will buy Hummers and F-22s after they read THAT?

Women?

Another reason why it's not just fine

Ask a knee surgeon.

I don't weigh myself, but another way I can tell I've gained too much weight, aside from an autoimmune flareup, is when my left knee starts hurting. The cartilage gets inflamed.

Sure, I could go to the doctor, get cortisone shots, talk about replacing the cartilage, all kinds of expensive therapy.

But just dropping the extra weight cures it much faster and with less expense and less danger and less impact on health care costs for everyone else.

I wonder how many knee replacement surgeons make their living from fat women who've been told to stop worrying about their weight because they're beautiful at any size.

Probably a lot.

It's official - Chicks are MESSED UP!

I'm working hard to develop her interest in math and science, in understanding the inner working of cells, how to use tools to change her world.

Now I've got to figure out how to keep her separated from other women so she wont go INSANE like all the others.

BTW - extra weight doesn't make you look ugly. Low self worth makes you look ugly. Makes you an a-hole too.

I love seeing this positive story here

It's sad that we need it, but we do. I have to say, though, that this is one nice thing about getting older - it really does take a back seat and our other contributions are appreciated.

Insofar as men need this, by all means I hope they get it too. I don't know if men ever receive the message (as we still do) that their ONLY value is in their looks, so I don't know if it's ever that bad for them, but, Lord, they're beautiful too!

Wednesday, July 1, 2009 10:04 AM

fat or fit?

@Silenced

I hope you lose all that weight that makes you unhealthy and stresses your body. Why did you let yourself get that way? Laziness? Impulse control issues? Depressed? You think image is only connected to weight?

Please do not assume that "fat" is the only criteria of female beauty judgement. Judgement begins around middle school when most of us uterine types are still skinny waifs. You either reject it or buy into it - it is really hard to be oblivious to it.

Lots and lots of knee surgeries are for people (male and female, big and little) who damage their knee during the wear and tear of athletic endeavers. I guess we should mock them, just like "fat ladies" for engaging in behaviour that damages their knees?

What is it with male posters and their obsession with female "fat"?

Wednesday, July 1, 2009 10:16 AM

Focus

But what if you're over-weight because you're depressed, or under-weight, because it makes you feel that there's less out there for others to devour? You need to know you're a beautiful person, but surely you've got to hear this from someone who can suss out the whole story, not someone who seems to want to co-operate with you in glassy-eyed, "happy me, happy you," oblivion.

parents' part

@xxpaulcpxx

I am assuming you are talking about your daughter?

Unfortunately - it is not just other females. Most of the negatives I have received have come from males, though females can be uniquely cruel too. Our culture and many others are still programmed to "rate" females according to the latest beauty standard. Boys and girls are affected by this - only girls get to internalize it.

Keep doing what you are doing. Expand her horizon intellectually and activity wise. And as much as you might think it superficial - do offer some praise of what is beautiful in her - she will hear plenty of negatives outside her family - make sure she has something positive to counter that.

It is not females you need to isolate her from - but the females who are caught up in the superficial world view as presented by the media. Most magasines targeting women and girls only reinforce this idea that they aren't good enough and must be changed (otherwise how to sell all that makeup and handbags?)

Keep opening your daughter's mind to the wonders of the world and she will ultimately find the superficiality of female "beauty" limiting and boring.

Which it is.
