Should Obama have picked Hillary?

Did the GOP just co-opt the Democrats' chance at making history? Sarah Palin, a conservative, antiabortion, pro-NRA Republican may just be the first woman in the White House.

The letters thread is now closed.

September 11, 2010, 3am, the phone rings

President Palin's husband: Who's this?

Kim Jong II: Kim Jong II

President Palin's husband: Kim Jon what?

Kim Jong II: Kim Jong II

President Palin's husband [covering the phone]: Honey, did you order pizza?

President Palin: Yes I did. I have been trying to finish Head of State for Dummies. I am really liking it.

President Palin’s husband: Shouldn’t you come to bed honey?

President Palin: I am almost done. I just got real hungry. Just tell him to bring it up to the Oval Office

President Palin's husband: Sir, when you see the big White House, just stop and call us again, all right? I will come down right away.

Kim Jong II: We are going to blow nuculear in your backyeard

President Palin's husband: Excuse me

Kim Jong II: Armaggedon, understand!

President Palin's husband: Sir, you do not need to scream. I am just not understanding you [covering the phone, speaking to his wife] these pizza delivery guys have such thick accents, don't they? They remind me of eskimos

President Palin: Hold on, maybe he is some kind of head of state. Shit, I told John I was not good at foreign names. Hold on, I am going to check on my list, I have it right here in the Palm Pilot. Ask him to spell his name

President Palin's husband: Sir, can you spell your name?

Kim Jong II: What?

President Palin's husband: Can you please spell your name? We are trying to identify you.

Kim Jong II: I warned you. You'll read my name tomorrow in the newspaper. Click.

President Palin's husband: He must have gotten the wrong number

President Palin: Let me call Pizza Hut, I want to get to the bottom of this

Where is Salon's coverage of Obama's speech?

I know there was a Walter Shapiro article last night.

But there's nothing about Gore, none of the videos Salon was posting prominently mid-week, and Joan Walsh AND Rebecca Traister completely skipped everything that happened at the convention on Thursday.

Did you two only show up to cover Clinton and PUMAs?

@teresawymore

To quote Katha Pollitt:

To vote for McCain, a feminist would have to be insane.

Oops, sorry, I'm on the Salon Parody site by mistake

Oh, no, I'm not....

Short answer to your headline: no. Add your own expletive.

Honest to God

When is Salon going to get off the Hillary train?

She's lost. It's over. Move on. This supposedly left-leaning site should really be supporting Obama rather than throwing more pictures of Hillary up on the front page whenever there's any feeble excuse to do so.

Y'all are making me mad.

@elephantman

Don't be so coy, you tease.

*slaps you on the ass*

@won'tgetfooledagain

wontgetfooledagain: "It totally undercuts Obama's message that he is the one who can bring great change to America (and the world) when Bama cannot handle the fact that his potential VP running mate would have been married to Billl Clinton."

Uh.....you just making stuff up? Who ever said Obama had a problem with Bill Clinton?

Looks like you got fooled again.

How shallow are the Repugs

Having been a Clinton supporter, I can't imagine for even one minute that Palin can stand in for Hillary in any way, not even beauty...Hillary was beautiful, too. I am sure Palin's beauty had everything to do with her being selected.

The Republicans don't care about credentials, experience, or any of that kind of thing. They like to pick personality figures like Ronald Reagan or people who already have big name recognition like George Bush. They could care less whether they actually can govern so long as they are against abortion rights and love the NRA, blah, blah, blah. With Palin, they went for beauty and her anti-abortion status. It doesn't matter to them that she is absolutely too inexperienced to be vice president.

When I think about it, I am disgusted that McCain who is so old would pick such a person to lead the country if something happens to him...and it might. At his age anything can happen. Remember, he has already had melanoma.

Evangelicals want everyone to be forced to HAVE the babies

You don't understand, they are VERY UPSET that people end up with kids they don't want and can't take care of, sadly and tragically however this is the terrible price that MUST BE PAID in order to deter people from having sex.

I'm Sorry, Ms. Traister,

but are you SERIOUS with this?

Friday, August 29, 2008 02:29 PM

Get a grip! Obama made history, not Palin

Good Lord, Ms Traister, get a grip! The GOP picks a woman to be a vice-presidential candidate - wow! Gee, it only took them 24 years since the Democrats did that first. History was made last night with Obama's nomination and acceptance sppech. Nothing will denigrate that moment, especially not Ms Palin. Are the women voters who supported Hillary going to go ga-ga over McCain simply because he picked a woman as a running mate??? If that's the case, and Ms Traister seems to imply as much, then that's a pretty sad comment about those voters. One would have to be totally unfamiliar with McCain and Palin's positions on women's issues in order to accept that premise. Hmmm, but then there's that addage about how people seem to vote against their own self-interest. Damn, I'm getting too cynical; maybe Ms Traister's cynicism is rubbing off on me...

No, Rebecca, Obama Shouldn't have Picked Hillary

Just seeing another female on a public platform shouldn't make you all trembly. The very experiences that made Hillary a viable candidate for President also caused her to lose the election, namely her association with Bill Clinton, as well and her own mismanagment of her campaign. They also made her unsuitable as a vice president.

There may be some women who will vote for any other woman, but I can't imagine that most Democrats will be attracted to Sara Palin. After all, would you think substituting Hillary for her would have a similar effect on Republicans? I didn't think so. She will be a good addition for the Republican base; I don't see a lot of Democrats swinging her way.

Friday, August 29, 2008 02:29 PM

The answer to the headline:

No.

Friday, August 29, 2008 02:29 PM

Um. No. The Dem's already picked a woman for VEEP...

Ferraro, remember? So the "history making" choice was made more than a decade ago -- and made by a Dem. Just because McCain is so old and sick that a completely unqualified right-wing, creationist (Dinosaurs and humans lived together in the Garden of Eden), power-abusing nut-job may be a heartbeat away from the Presidency is, I'll bet, more likely to turn off moderate voters, than turn them on.
