Should Obama have picked Hillary?

Did the GOP just co-opt the Democrats' chance at making history? Sarah Palin, a conservative, antiabortion, pro-NRA Republican may just be the first woman in the White House.

The letters thread is now closed.

Woman problem

Obama has a "perceived woman problem"? Who has this perception? He chose the candidate he thought would make the best running mate, not because he's a sexist. He may have a "Hillary problem" with the PUMA's, yes. I guess McCain has no woman problem even though he chose a totally aniabortion person who happens to have a vagina, and would be harmful to women's, and the country's, interests.

I personally can't believe that a Hillary supporter would vote for the McCain-Palin ticket. In a way, she'd actually be voting against Hillary.

@ Xrandadu Hutman: And you're a jackaknape

asshole who can't stand it when women call you on your blathering sexism.

Your dick seems to catch fire whenever there is a conversation/article about (or by) strong women.

You have rarely been objective or honest in your criticism of either Hillary Clinton or the women who write about her. You're a whiny baby who acts like the victims you accuse and have accused feminist women who supported HRC of being.

You've got a chip on your shoulder and a grudge a mile wide and a mile deep when it comes to Traister and Joan Walsh. Yet there are people here who actually believe you're a deep and philosophical thinker.

Shows you how much thinking they actually do.

@elephantman

As you suggest, the truck-stop waitress the newly minted GOP VP candidate so strongly resembles deserves all of the benefits of a post-Bush economy that recognizes and rewards her struggles--with family-friendly policies and a fair wage.

But she does NOT deserve to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Therein lies the point.

@libertyson

The best part of this

I am however enjoying the fact that somewhere right now Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty are crying in a corner.

Tom Ridge is shaking his head, Pennsylvania and Michigan are aghast at the fact McCain just threw their states under the bus and has lost this election.

Obama was surging ahead in Gallup by 4 points as early as Wednesday. By Monday he'll be up to 6 easily.

The Republicans are even dumber than I thought they were.

And Huckabee is probably pounding walls and cursing. Ohio and Florida will probably be teed off as well.

Palin an Interesting Choice

I hope Democrats reconsider attacking Palin on experience. If you compare her to Biden, then people will wonder why Biden is not on the top of the ticket. Voters look at the presidential candidate as their main choice not the VP. If you start getting into experience then Obama will become the issue. Obama needs to stick with the ideas and issues of the Democratic Party because that is our strength.

We have to remember not all women and Democrats are liberals. Some are moderates and other may be socially conservative on certain issues but remain in the party. Women may view voting for Palin as validation that someone, anyone does believe in their ability to hold a leadership position as high as a VP just like Conservative African Americans who support Obama. The Democratic Party and Obama may tout their support of women's issues but the reason Democratic women are looking at McCain because some women question the party's respect for women as a gender when a woman runs as a Democratic candidate against a favored choice.

If the Democratic Party and Obama have done everything they could do to unify the Clinton supporters with the party, then the party should not worry. If the party leadership in good faith listened and addressed the concerns of Clinton supporters, they won't use the power of the ballot box to let their voices to be heard. If Clinton supporters feel the Democratic Party and Obama's campaign treated them with fairness, respect and inclusion throughout the election, they don't need to win them back to the party. But if the party alienated them by discounting their support and rebuffing their concerns, then we can not blame them for not supporting a Democratic candidate. We keep telling these reluctant voters-- don't play the victim and get over it. I saw a number of them who "got over it" and then move by leaving the party as early as March because they refuse to play the victim.

The question is whether Palin will be the one to sway these women to vote McCain. The answer may lie partly on how the Obama campaign and the Democrats respond to McCain's choice during the remaining days of the election. If they misjudge Palin and the motives of undecided women voters, McCain's pick could be a winner.

Biden gave us Clarence Thomas

Biden is not a strong pro-choice advocate -- he sent the nomination of Clarence Thomas when he didn't have to. http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2006/01/filibustering-alito-clarence-thomas.html

Let's point out the obvious

Does anyone here believe that McSame would have picked Palin if Obama had picked Hillary? If Obama having picked a man as his running mate caused McSame to pick Palin, then Biden is the best VP selection ever made.

Dem upset, you bet!!

I'm loving this. Dems are wildly throwing punches that are not drawing a bit of blood. The big punch is "experience," yet millions of Americans will believe that Palin actually is more experienced that the top of the Dem ticket. Let's face it, the guy was a senator for 15 months before he ran for president. Palin has been both a mayor and governor! She kicks his ass!

The further beauty is that the more you Dems go wild on "experience," the more the other side gets to respond with counter punches about Palin being better than Obama.

...and wait until we get to the VP debate. I keep reading postings on the internet saying Biden will rip Palin to pieces. Haha! He going to run into a buzz saw!

Obama was trumped

John McCain trumped the Great Messiah by picking Sarah Palin. She covers a lot of bases for McCain and underscores his reputation as a maverick. She will be an effective foil for the ever-arrogant and abrasive Joe Biden, and her "Barracuda-like" toughness will make it hard for him to counter her without appearing sexist. With her record of being strong on ethics, firmly against pork-barrel spending, and her background of standing up against the idiots who would prevent us from drilling in ANWR and in off-shore areas, she's going to be formidable. The Obamatons will continute to harp about her inexperience and complain that McCain is "pandering to women" because they wholeheartedly wish they had used his tactics first. Oh, if they could only renege on Biden and choose Hillary! But Sarah Palin is a fresh face; she's no pushover; and she's unconventional. Who's the agent of change now? The predictable whining of the Dems is so tiresome. How does it feel to be "hoist by your own petard?" Maybe an old dog CAN come up with some new tricks. BTW, won't Hillary just croak if Sarah Palin ends up being the first woman President??????
