Should Obama have picked Hillary?

Did the GOP just co-opt the Democrats' chance at making history? Sarah Palin, a conservative, antiabortion, pro-NRA Republican may just be the first woman in the White House.

The letters thread is now closed.

Salon's Analysis Laughable

McCain just handed Obama manna from heaven today, and instead of having his back Salon posts this twisted, vapid commentary on how he should have picked Hillary.

Obama made the right choice. picking Hillary would have made him look a weak supplicant. McCain's choice was defensive and pathetic. Howabout calling it out instead of wallowing in defunct PUMAville.

What it's really about

Can’t help but see this as a cynical (though inspired) choice. The GOP probably thinks her story - her rise from humble beginnings, a woman breaking the glass ceiling, the heartwarming family story, oldest son going to Iraq - will inoculate her from the kinds of rough stuff they are surely lining up for Obama and Biden. Maybe this choice is to neutralize Biden at the debate - he can’t help but become the bad guy the instant he questions her experience or anything else about her candidacy.

Appealing to the women’s vote aside, isn’t this really about getting the blue collar white guy vote? We will be treated to lots of features about her down-to-earth blue collar husband, and how he is a hard working, family values kind of man who represents the best of American manhood. It will be kind of like a Chevy commercial. They will be trying to suck in as many white guys who might have otherwise been persuaded by Joe Biden to vote in their interests. Can’t wait for the fun to begin.

Hey LOLCAIT, you still haven't admitted you lied about Obama visiting the troops

Everybody, lolcait lied point-blank on a thoroughly debunked issue. I responded with several links that demonstrate conclusively that lolcait was lying.

What does lolcait do?

Suddenly pretend I don't exist!

Funny, lolcait, you had no trouble replying to me when it was merely to insult me. But faced with actual evidence that you can't deny or respond to, you have totally backed down.

Everybody, observe: Lolcait has no spine.

Democrats will lose in the fall

And the reason won't be policy related, it will be because Democrats just don't get people who don't think like they do.

So many of the posts here are anti-women and anti-poor people. So many on the left just look down on anyone below a certain income, and hate those above another artificial level.

There's nothing wrong with being a truck-stop waitress. Nothing at all. What's wrong is if there are barriers that prevent someone from doing something else. But it's that persons choice.

Yes, people will vote for the Republicans now because there is a women on the ticket. Exactly as there are blacks and others who are voting for Obama simply because of the color of his skin. This is because both represent a departure from the norm.

No matter what, come next February, the elected Executive branch of the United States Government will not consist exclusively of White Men.

We will have either a Black or a Women as part of this historic event.

But instead of embracing this, Democrats are resorting to petty name calling, saying Palin is a beauty queen, which is exactly like calling Obama just a basketball player.

Women of America, this is what McCain is trying to tell you:

"My female friends, I think you are all mindless sheep who would follow anything wearing a skirt. So here you go. Sarah Palin. She's a woman. That's all you need to know. Perhaps if you'd spent five years as a POW during the Vietnam war, as I did (perhaps you've heard), you'd have the judgement to think independently, but you didn't spend five years as a POW during the Vietnam war, as I did (perhaps you've heard), so you don't. After you've finished painting your faces like trollops, vote for me, you cunts!

"Oh....one more thing. I was a POW. Had you heard that yet?"

Another way to look at it

In a period when people were mad as hell at the government, Perot's selection of that whacked out tottering Admiral helped seal his election fate (it was not the only reason for his loss).

Think of all the other presidential candidates who made bad choices in running mates. With the exception of Bush the First and Potatoehead, usually the party with the weak VP candidate loses.

Besides, McSame standing next to his VP pick looks pathetic.

Credentials

Say McSame croaks. Palin is now President Sarah Palin. What is her credential that makes her worthy of being THE Commander in Chief of the most powerful nation in the history of the world?

Same as Obama's only she appears to have some convictions and substance.

Friday, August 29, 2008 04:09 PM

I know why

STRAIGHT TICKET VOTING McSame is trying to save his buddies Stevens and Young ?

More boo hoo hooing over Hillary from Salon

Rebecca and Joan are concerned, in case you haven't noticed. Very concerned.

Palin will get torn to shreds by Biden, and I imagine her Downs Syndrome child will be exploited by her the same way McCain's POW experience has been exploited by him.

And, as always, Salon will be there to report on these developments, being sure to throw in Hillary Clinton's name whenever possible.

It's no wonder I'm spending more time at the Huffington Post now. Ironically, I come here to learn what the Republican response will be.

Friday, August 29, 2008 04:09 PM

Harriet Miers, anyone?

A more unqualified choice would have been impossible. Purely symbolic - absolutely no expertise on anything. A freaking creationist!

This is a desperation heave.

As a woman, I find McCain's choice insulting

I didn't support Hillary in the primaries because I couldn't get past her support for the biggest foreign policy decision of our time - it struck me as a fundamental error in judgment at a time when not making the popular choice was the right thing to do. The women I knew who supported Hillary had reasons for doing so - her advocacy on health care or children's issues - or the fact that Democrats are so much better on the economy than Republicans, and they expected her to continue that trend. The point is, we all supported our candidates based on issues.

To have McCain come along and say - here, you didn't get to vote for one c*nt, here's another one - that oughta keep you happy... it's just like saying women are incapable of thinking through the issues. I'm not going to vote for the anti-science, anti-woman candidate simply because she has a vagina. Do the McCain people think we're stupid? Because that's what this choice says to me.
