Should Obama have picked Hillary?

Did the GOP just co-opt the Democrats' chance at making history? Sarah Palin, a conservative, antiabortion, pro-NRA Republican may just be the first woman in the White House.

The letters thread is now closed.

PUMA's

PUMA's all over TV. They like this lady. If McCain picked a man they would probably end up voting Obama but not now.

Mission accomplished.

Impressions will get more favorable in the next few days not less.

Brilliant move for McCain.

This whole thing is going to be fun to watch.

Wow, you just don't get it

McCain just sewed the up the working class vote with Palin.

The comments here are ignorant, off-the-cuff remarks by idiots who haven't done a smidgeon of research.

And remarks like this --"To me, she looks like the head waitress at a truck stop." -- are the heart of the Democrats' problem.

They have contempt for the very people they claim to care so much about. Trust me, we'll see Obama's "bitter" speech to a bunch of San Francisco liberal fatcats replayed many times this fall, and it'll be compared to Palin's religious faith, her lifelong NRA membership, and her tough-as-nails tenure in Alaska politics.

Say goodbye to Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and all of the South. Say goodbye probably to Nevada and Colorado, too.

In contrast to the ignorant elitists of Salon, people in those states like a woman like Palin.

@MaBelle

MaBelle: "And your whininess about anything female or feminist..."

You're a disreputable, trolling liar as well. Witness the garbage you said to me in Joan Walsh's column about Stephanie Tubbs Jones. You basically came in and said I had attacked Walsh/Jones, when in fact I had praised both of them in no uncertain terms. Accusing somebody of being sexist when that person has said nothing remotely sexist is just dishonest garbage, and you do it again and again. You're just a foul human, and you contribute nothing of value to any of these threads.

Harriet Miers would have been a better choice

By next week, she WILL be Harriet Miers.

This is about RIGHT.

So, whatever DID happen to Bill Richardson as a choice?!? I thought he would have caused the Dumocrats some pause, being Hispanic, because McSame could not be accused of pandering by picking either a woman or another black man, yet the move wouldd have STILL been progressive and would have stolen a lot of Hispanic votes from Obama.

As it stands today, Harriet Miers looks like she would have been a BETTER choice, at least she LOOKS like she has leadership potential.

@CargoCult

What? You seem to think there's something wrong with the governor of Alaska issuing a press release about the sale of drilling rights in her state?

Or are you one of those idiotic moonbats who associate anything to do with oil with corruption?

What do you power you car with, canola oil?

Idiot.

@lolcait

lolcait: "PUMA's all over TV. They like this lady. If McCain picked a man they would probably end up voting Obama but not now."

Notice you didn't bother mentioning where on TV, what channel, whether there were opposing views. You're making things up to bolster your side, which has always been GOP all the way.

More noticeably, you ignored my response to your false claim about Obama. That's because you know I caught you purposely lying in order to mislead people.

Can you give people one good reason they should ever trust anything you have to say?

What would happen to Palin's down syndrome child if she was poor and had no health insurance

If there was a serious interviewer out there who'd have a crack at her, that would be the only question to ask

Let's Stop Talking about Hillary

My God, let's stop talking about Hillary. All this feeds right into the McCain / Fox News story line. This is the day after one of the best political speeches of a generation by Barack Obama, and the first time an African-American has been a nominee of a major party. I log into Salon and see another goddamn picture of Hillary on the front page? We are so stupid sometimes.

what happened

What happened to sexism in politics did it just vanish because McCain picked a woman wow its a miracle remember lady PUMA'S or closet republicans we have the same media and white angry men voting in the general election too.

judgement

Maybe mccain is looking for wife number three ?

Friday, August 29, 2008 04:00 PM

This article is an embarassment...

My wife' reaction to this pick was the same as mine, its an insulting pander that no intelligent woman (or man) could fail to see through. Maybe Ms. Traister simply thinks all us common folk are too stupid to see the trick and is duly concerned. Or maybe she actually falls for it. Either way, the subject of this post is correct.

It's Not a Question of History

It's a question of sheer panic. Rove and Schmidt obviously looked at their polling last night and freaked out. Why else would they have called Tim Pawlenty as late as yesterday, told him he was under serious consideration, and advised him to get back to Minneapolis so he could get to Dayton more easily? That's the only explanation I can come up with for this completely mystifying selection.

Unless the McCain campaign already knows it's going to lose, and the Bushies want him saddled with a vice presidential candidate too weak to inherit the leadership of the party — ensuring that nothing will stand between the 2012 nomination and (pick one) Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, George Allen, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum or Charlie Crist.

Friday, August 29, 2008 04:03 PM

Oh for crying out loud, RT

Enough with the Salon concern trolling.

Whose side are you on anyway?

Friday, August 29, 2008 04:03 PM

Just when the PUMA's were starting to

get over their anger and resolve to cast a tepid vote for Barack Dukakis, they get to be reminded all over again how Hillary was treated by Obama fans and sexists on TV. That will last until election day. Obama's biggest fans will hand McCain the presidency. Shakespearian.

Friday, August 29, 2008 04:04 PM

Okay ...

This is like the fourth time I've posted this link, but to all you who say this is just pandering and will have no effect on women or PUMAs, read here:

http://volokh.com/archives/archive_2008_08_24-2008_08_30.shtml#1220031014

Sounds like the Palin pick impressed a lot of both.

Whistling past the graveyard, that's the impression I get from a lot of the comments here.

Friday, August 29, 2008 04:04 PM

Of course not!

Obama chose a highly qualified candidate who will help fill in the gaps in his own resume. McCain chose Palin in desperation. I'm surprised that you think anyone will even take this choice seriously. You're manufacturing a crisis that doesn't exist. I do remember that you are a Hillary supporter, so I understand your bias, but it's impairing your judgment.
