Don't blame Edwards, blame society!

An Op-Ed argues that the admitted adulterer is a victim of society and his seductress.

The letters thread is now closed.

Oh God

What next? He tripped and accidentally fell into her vagina, again and again?

Does anything here happen above the neckline?

I used to think prudes were boring but now I've begun to think that they're snazzy compared to the coneys, constantly rabbiting on about what rabbits do more energetically and far less fanfare.

if more wives were willing to act like whores (with their husbands) there might not be such a dichotomy

(although obviously in this particular case, chemo and all, it would have been nice to make allowances)

Younger Woman

John Edwards' affair is only the most recent of innumerable examples of "a relatively powerful, successful middle-age man succumbing to the temptations of a younger woman."

How old is Edwards' mistress? She didn't strike me as being particularly young -- or at least not much younger than Edwards himself. (Especially compared to Lewinsky or Spitzer's chick.) Frankly, I'm disappointed he aimed so low. If you're going to risk your whole career and marriage, at least have an affair with someone sexy.

Wives like whores?

Oh indeed! Let's get it right out in the open and no need for any talk about love. What should wives charge for vaginal sex? What is the going rate? Wives should get at least as much as so-called higher class prostitutes because there would be a presumption of exclusivity and less likelihood of wives transmitting disease. How much should wives get for blow jobs? Anal sex?

Oh, I know what some guys are going to say. They are going to say that they should get these things for free because it is implied that they are supporting the woman. Only most of them are not. In most marriages these days, both couples work.

Oh, but they will say, some of them are home taking care of the family.

What is the going rate for childcare? Maid service? Chauffeuring?

Let us forget that in sickness and health stuff. That love and cherish stuff. That forsaking all others stuff.

If one believes the common Broadsheet troll, every man gets married with his fingers crossed behind his back when he promises fidelity.

Blame anyone but me.

I must stand up and say, this guy is a moron. I'm sick of all these men, trying to explain this away.

You know that old saying men are pigs, duh, we are. We are irrational when it comes to sex. The mere scent of female pheromones causes us to behave like 13 year olds. We don't get to the part were we think about others, we get stuck on "Can I get away with this". If we perceive this to be as little as 10%, all systems go.

But the key to being a responsible adult is SELF CONTROL, otherwise we would all be crazed drug addict alcoholic cheating nymphos on speed(with guns).

"So it's all her fault for smelling like a girl, and allowing society to dictate who gets to cheat" (Usually rich, powerful men, who undoubtedly get forgiven by god, their wives, children, congregation, constituents, (add your own here) etc. etc.

So to all the idiots out there claiming they know why this happens, stop projecting and go apologize to your spouse.

What About Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs?

I am not yet again trying to excuse Edward's for his stupid actions. Yet again, WHAT WAS HEEEE THINKINGGGG????" However, even in my business school organizational behavior class there is the theory of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Sex is a basic need according to Maslow. From my assimilation of blognews, papernews, Rielle loved sex, I don't think she was a sexual predator but admittedly freely enjoyed sex. Okay, Edwards, was married for how long? He is a fairly good looking for his age, a wife with cancer where the campaign trail has obviously taken a toll on her weight and I love Elizabeth Edwards but they both were campaigning together, she had cancer...really how much sex did they really have??? I don't mean to be crude but really, particularly, political couples, part of marriage is trust, letting your mental guard down, your public facades down, being alone with Elizabeth was probably one of Edward's few times he could just be and not "BE" John Edwards. Probably the last thing on both their minds was sex. I think the same syndrome affected Elliot Spitzer. Spitzer and his wife had 2 kids when he was alone with his wife which was probably infrequent they probably had to go through the day to day humdrum of sharing a life and managing kids, I don't think Spitzer and his wife probably had time to think about sex.

Then you take sexual energy, the newness of it, and I think it is pretty freely documented men react much more quickly than "most" women to sexual stimuli, so you get the hormones going, the sexual juices going and then you take the fact, Rielle, and I think this goes along to the point of the article, I think Rielle was stimulated by powerful men, so Edwards succumbed to Maslow's hierarchy he craved sex. .And quite frankly when in the midst of a lustful episode, the mind is saying ,"what harm can it do?"....

The other basic needs of Maslow's hierarchy are breathing, food, sleep, going to the bathroom, and sex. You have to breath, candidates get thirsty, or hungry, they eat or drink. Candidates can go without sleep but at some point they have to sleep, and sex?? Overall, married, busy couples, I assume, I am not married, with 2 or more kids, sex gets a second seat and some times without the sex, the wife usually becomes the ex.....So you take charismastic people, Bill Clinton I personally think had a sex addiction problem. Edwards I think kept his boundaries for the most part but there comes a point I think when people like Rielle are around, using their verbal ploys of new ageisms, the brain starts to say, "what harm can it do" and the need for sex comes to the forefront"....And you start adding the stress associated with campaigning, the energy drain of campaigning, the ego boosting of campaiging....I guess my overall point, is I don't think you blame society, I think you blame the media for making such a big deal about it. I guess my point is that sex is part of life, affairs happen, and I think you blame the media for making candidates and media figures have to be "perfect". I still am not absolving Edwards but I am saying it is not surprising that it happened...........................
