I thought Obama had promised to end the torture.
This is horrifying.
I would write my congressman and complain, but I look horrible in orange,
sad, de-natured man who lived in what must be the most artificial environment in the world. California is bankrupt anyway so this gala for ghouls might attract some revenue if the gaping hordes descend for the obsequies. I suppose Governor Scharznegger will have something profound to say, a latter-day Goethe, you can be sure.
Are all these Filipino prisoners men or variations? I hope they haven't committed any really vicious crimes such as violence against women, expecially as they're being extolled on Broadsheet. "Moonwalking" pales into insignificance when compared to the moon-landing almost 40 years ago but it would be cranky to complain that human beings are getting dumber and dumber when choreography trumps science.
Took time to whore out their dead brother on BET last night. Stay classy. And Joe? Nice Wil.I.Am hat and gold chains, but the wraparound shades are strange looking.
And I honestly could not tell which Sister it was. Was it the nipple chick or LaToya or is there another one somewhere?
What is wrong with you? What in God's name does the moon landing have to do with the Moonwalk dance at all? It is not as if today is even the anniversary of the moon landing (I googled). At least if it was, you might make a little sense, but you flew off into orbit around Planet Curmudgeon.
As for the video from 1970, I for one don't remember a thing about it.
Why is this a Broadsheet story? By any stretch of the imagination--how is this "tribute" a women's issue? I am not a troll, not someone who usually rants on here about some of the more tangentially related articles, but as a long-time Salon reader, I don't know where else to voice the following:
The repulsive salivation by media outlets and "fans" in response to Michael Jackson's death is mortifying. Does anyone realize that society has now told all vicitims of sexual abuse that they don't count? That celebrity is more important than crime? That we love pedophiles more than victims?
Perhaps this is the women's issue.
Of all places, you'd think Broadsheet might offer an alternative view to all of this sick revisionism and icon worship, but instead we get the same dumb youtube links that are deadening our brains every day, anyway.
Hey everyone, go molest some kids! Just make sure you write a couple of crappy pop songs first and then no one will think any less of you and, in death, you might even become a religious figure!
...EPIC?
Gams is understandably confused about the moon-landing remarks from Maureenodonnell. With help from Joni Mitchell, I think I can translate. In one of her most sardonic lines, Joni succinctly summarized a certain attitude that demands recognition of superiority of anyone deemed lesser: "We walked on the moon; you be polite."
The rest of us suckers who found Jackson's moon walk fun or impressive or an exciting expression of physical grace will now apologize. Close your eyes and think only of NASA!
By the way, if it makes you feel a little better, Ms O'Donnell, the prison yard choreography began with a rational purpose. The inmates were bored and indifferent at the calisthenics they were supposed to do in unison. Then someone had the bright idea to substitute dance routines, aiding the aim of group exercise.
I agree that this seems to be off-topic for Broadsheet, but you seem to be forgetting that Mr. Jackson was acquitted. Most of the encomiums I've read have gone out of their way to channel their praise specifically towards his artistic achievements and qualify them with reservations about his personal life. I don't think anyone feels good about his unusual relationships with children. There is such a thing as separating the art from the artist. When Phil Spector was convicted of murder, rock critics didn't seem inclined to retroactively dismiss his achievements.
The lesson is if you do the crime, prepare to be forced to spend days of forced dance rehearsals then exhibited to the world. The thought of a male prisoner being put on YouTube dressed up as Michael Jackson's Thriller girlfriend sounds like a pretty good crime deterrent to me!
I didn't "forget" that he was acquitted. I simply didn't agree with the jury's decision, as is my right. Many people didn't agree with the first OJ Simpson verdict, either, but he was clearly considered guilty by the American public.
Most pedophiles are never even officially accused and tried, let alone convicted--this does not mean they didn't do it; it means that it's up to a scared child to convince a bunch of adults that someone hurt them, and in the absense of medical proof such as an STD or torn tissue, that's almost impossible because no one wants to truly admit this happens. We are accused of lying, of "wanting it," of being willing participants. It's almost impossible to convince one's own parents that a relative is a monster, but the singer of "Beat It" and the preposterous, offensive "Billie Jean"? Go to hell, victims. You don't count.
Haters: If you find a single other thing on the internet today that's better than this, could you please include the link in your comment?
My dear outrider, your brains looks, smells and tastes like cottage cheese.
Hmmm hmmmm good.
Lester Maddox, Governor of Georgia before Jimmy Carter, said, "The only way to improve Georgia prisons is to get a better class of prisoner." It looks like that has been done.
Now, whether that is a good thing, I wonder.
Uhm, this really isn't so cute guys, although it's quite the accomplishment.
I'd like to think there's a little more scrutiny that stories go through in order to get published on Salon. There are a lot of disturbing truths to this Philippine prison -- I mean, sure, it's cute, but think of the logistics of getting murderers and violent people to all dance, coordinated.
It doesn't happen without a bit of a fight:

Anyway, check that out, and perhaps write about the prostitution and use of attractive female prisoners for personal concubines for the feminist section.
