Of course Obama has done enough - whatever that means. I don't want to be in a war with Iran. The Iranians are doing what people always do when they've been oppressed for a long time. I hope Iranians get the government they want. I applaud the demonstrators. These are people with tremendous courage.
Its a delight to finally see a US president who respects peoples right to make there own decisions.
And BTW? what about the men in Iran? they're dying and being injured in far greater numbers than the women, are they not brave? are they just chopped liver?
Wow, I'm impressed Flory; you've written something other than virgin's, sexting, or anything else sex related.
Yes, it's nice seeing the women being on the forefront of these protests. One could argue that Neda is a martyr for feminism and the woman's cause in the middle east. Other than condemning the violence in the most generic terms the US should stay out of Iran's business. Yet, this violence against all, but especially this innocent woman deserves the harshest of condemnation.
It's a shame this hasn't gotten more coverage here in broadsheet. Instead one of your colleague's is falsely reporting a "menstrual mishap" by some unfortunate jailbait lolita, whining about how "women blood" is regarded as dirty than just plain old blood. I know some feminist feel so womanly when their on the rag (I think Flory, you wanted to throw tampons like confetti as a celebration for something), but I think ending violence against women like the violence that took Neda's life should take priority over ending menstrual taboos.
We need to stay out of this. Anyone we back in any official capacity will lose credibility.
Obama is walking a fine line very well. The man can handle complexity and nuance.
Dear Broadsheet,
I believe Obama is handling the Iranian crisis perfectly. The bellicosity that marked the previous administration got us into the perfectly wonderful mess(es) we now find ourselves in. In keeping with his reputation as an "elitist", he decided to try what many elites used up until the late 20th century: caution, research, patience, restraint, and intelligence. Who knew it would work?
His press conference this morning was most illustrative; various minions of Fox and other news organizations attempted to bait him on the subject, and he was as candid as he was dismissive. It's my observation that an underlying reason for some of the media's hostility toward him is his refusal to act dumb or pretend he isn't smarter than most of the people in the room. So much of the Washington punditocracy got used to the charm of Clinton and the smarm of Bush, and the result was an incestuous press that rarely pushed back, or exercised a modicum of critical thinking. It's exhilarating watching Obama in action, and his deft handling of the Iranian situation earns him a conditional "A".
The wording of Obama's statement is pitch perfect. I think most of the criticism is coming from the right wing and since they complain no matter what(and have fucked up so much of the world) it is hard to take anything they say seriously. Certainly they may praise this statement but only in a backhanded way to take credit for what they like.
Beyond that I wonder what more our government could or should really do. Extending support to this grassroots, democratic uprising is important. Anything other than that would appear to be interfering with that very will of the people and exploiting it to our own ends – thereby robbing it of the very legitimacy we praise.
